Self-explanatory.
----
Mine is pretty darned big; I tend to use a lot of big words at times- like today, when I stopped by a 7-Eleven to get a hot dog meal, when I pointed out the chips and drink I bought w/the dog, I said to the cashier, "...and all the accoutrements!" And then another cashier used another big word: "Aforementioned." I love it. :D

I'm a writer and editor by trade, so I believe my vocabulary is quite substantial. :D

Sometimes I'll say something to my mom, only to have her reply, "What does that mean?"

My vocabulary is profusely voluminous! My penchant for the polysyllabic and the vastness of my verbosity is beyond measure. Likewise, my capacity for colloquialisms is uncanny.

(Yes...I did use a little poetic license in order to try and make it work in terms of alliteration.)

I try to keep in mind who I'm speaking to and not use words they are not likely able to understand.

Let's see...

If I counted right, it's fourteen letters long, plus a question mark. Not very big, really.

In an IQ test I scored quite high in vocabulary. That was surprising to me because I've always had difficultly with spelling. I'm a writer and sometimes I write down a word exceeding the usual three syllables that I've scarcely used before and I'm actually not quite sure if I've got the meaning right. But I usually do get it right.

I do have a extensive vocabulary but it's hidden from me. I'll either write or say a word and not know where it's come from or how I know the meaning.

There's not one word mentioned in this thread that I haven't used before or don't know the meaning to. Some novels I read I come across one or two words I've never heard of and note that I should look them up so I can replicate them in my writing. The more I read the more I digest new words and estimate the meaning, and most times I'm pretty spot on.

Lately though I've been hanging around with the common folk and have mirrored their colloquialisms, as well as 'Launchy-speak.'

I have always had a big vocabulary. I believe I was hyperlexic as a child, and I've loved words all of my life. I scored very highly in Vocabulary on the WAIS. In verbal fluency tests, when asked to name words that start with a particular letter, I always think of obscure words first, not easy ones. I don't know why this is. But during one verbal fluency test, when given the letter "F", words like "fluorescent" or "facetious" were what I thought of first, not "fish" or "food."

My very first word was 5 syllabels apparently. I naturally fall into a pattern of using overly complex language if I do not watch myself. I realise that this can make me appear a bit of a showoff or a smartass so I do try and avoid this where I think it might put people off.

When I took the ASVAB test I scored 98/100 on vocabulary. The job it said I would be good for was Air Traffic Controller,WTF,I'd have a meltdown the first day and probably send planes crashing into each other, not a job I'd want.I can't even imagine the stress those people go through everyday. The last job on the list was librarian, that I could do,I love the smell and feel of books.A fun game to build vocabulary is to play Dictonary, someone opens it randomly, picks out a word and people try to guess it's meaning, this can be quite comical. Then you learn what the word really means and pass the dictionary to the next person and the game continues.

Sometimes I like to use big words for fun when I write. For instance, I created a thread in this forum called "Connectedness" and, in it, I not only decided use a few big words, but I went on a limb and used alliteration! Imagine that? Yes, even I found that a little absurd but nevertheless amusing. My wife and I sometimes play this game where we send email messages that are pure alliteration; sometimes it takes a while to get right but there's some satisfaction in pulling it off. I don't consider myself to have a particularly large vocabulary (my memory sucks); I'm more likely to use big words in prose than in conversation since pronounciation is not one of my strong suites. To some people, using big words and constructs like alliteration may come across as being snobbish but, rest assured, it's all about self-indulgence. Isn't self-indulgence a vice that can spawn out of Asperger's Syndrome?

I don't have a very pretentious vocabulary but I would like to improve it because I could describe more accurately my thoughts.
And I don't think that a rich vocabulary has anything to do with intelligence, although it might be a sign of it.
