Last night I saw 8 Foot Sativa, they're one of the biggest Kiwi Metal bands. Not a huge fan of their albums, definitely more of a live band. They gave it their all & put on a hell of a show, real fun. Here's a picture of the gig, just look for Opeth's logo and you'll find me.

I grew up near the San Francisco bay area of northern California. Famous artists, formerly famous artists, and future famous artists always passed through and played in cities near where I lived. It's been a while since I've gone to a concert, but back in the late 1970s and through the 80s I saw such bands as

There were some others I can't recall right now, but the Dead Kennedys and Yngvie Malmsteen made the biggest impression on me with their live shows.

The first five bands in my list were all at one concert, a "Day on the Green" in I think the summer of 1978 or 1979. AC/DC put on a high energy show, but to me most of their songs are so similar they all sound the same. I think Van Halen had just released their second album then, or maybe they were still touring the first album. Foreigner did not impress me (I thought of them as a copycat of the sound of the band Boston), but Pat Travers did. Aerosmith was drunk on stage that concert and didn't do very well.

I saw the Who after Keith Moon had died. I don't remember much from that concert except going there and a memory of Pete Townshend in a circle of light on a dark stage. Yes, he jumped and "windmilled" his arms. I can't remember if they smashed much equipment at the end of the show. I think they did a little smashing to please the fans.

Stanley Jordan became famous as a street musician who "tapped" with both hands instead of picking or strumming with his right hand and fretting with the left. This enabled him to play complex arrangements of two or three melodies going at once, but his music did have a distinctive sound to it because there was no picking of notes or strumming of chords, only tapping the notes on the fingerboard using both hands at once. It is an awesome technique, but it does sound different than regular guitar playing.

I also saw John McLaughlin (of the Mahavishnu orchestra) and Carlos Santana was in the audience that night. Santana was called up on stage to jam with McLaughlin. Santana didn't look too happy, but they did a song or two together.

I'm sure I saw more famous artists than who I list here, but these are the ones that I still remember seeing lol.

This is kind of a funny mental image. A sad looking Pete Townshend, "guess I'll smash this spare guitar or whatever. Maybe kick this amp over a little bit. I find no joy in my work".

Seeing the Who at VFest was one of the saddest things ever. Pete Townsend's guitar wasn't even plugged in as far as I could tell, he was doing windmills seemingly at random inappropriate times, with no associated sound coming out. I saw a guitarist sort-of-backstage who appeared to be playing all his proper parts. In his defense I think he's basically deaf at this point? I think some of Roger Daltrey's vocals were piped in as well. I left about halfway into their set to go see Scissor Sisters.

Also have seen a lot of other smaller support acts and more obscure bands that I didn't particularly like much. I'll soon be seeing Chromatics, Grizzly Bear, The Dandy Warhols, Santigold, Grimes, Sleigh Bells, Foals, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. My favourite live show ever would have to be Portishead, whereas my favourite live show of 2012 thus far would be a tie between Girls and Wild Flag.
