Hey, not quite sure if this belongs in Random or General autism forums, but I would like to hear about one or more of your special interests and 5 facts about each one!

I love aspies, and I love our ability to focus on our narrow interests and would like to give each of you a chance to describe yours.

I'll go first. I love coins and numismatic items, and collect such - both Canadian, American and others from around the globe.

1. The Canadian one dollar coin "loonie" first came out in 1987 (before i was born), replacing the previous silver dollar coin

2. ^^ After the loonie was introduced, the last one dollar bill was printed in 1989.

3. Gold prices rise and fall every second of everyday, except on the weekends!

4. Coin collecting is an ancient hobby, practiced regardless of wealth - it can be a great investment though.

5. Mistakes are good! The coins/bills that are incomplete, or have a mistake - ie) tails or heads on both sides of the coin can be worth much more than anyone realizes - sometimes up to 20X their face value

:) OK your turn!

Paleoanthroplogy

Some of our first ancestors were bi-pedal apes that lived 6 to 7 million years ago.

50 thousand years ago there were three species of humans inhabiting Europe and Asia. Neanderthals, Homo erectus, and us. We are the only ones left.

All modern humans descended from a population of as little as 600 individuals who inhabited Africa around 140 thousand years ago.

The first hominid to migrate out of Africa into Europe and Asia was Homo erectus, probably about 1 and a half million years ago.

Humans probably began loosing their body hair around 3 million years ago.

Psychology

Very-Early Onset Schizophrenia is one of the rarest mental disorders.
Social Isolation causes Autistic behavior in Monkeys.
Anxiety is associated with higher levels of Adrenaline, one of the few differences between wild and domestic animals increased adrenaline.
Tourette's often comes out as OCD in females.
Frontal-Temporal Dementia can cause stimming in otherwise neurotypical people.

Sighthounds (My Latest obcession)

Saluki's are considered the oldest breed of dog, even being buried in pyramids.
The top three fastest dogs are Greyhound, Saluki and Borzoi. All sighthounds.
Unlike Scenthounds, they have been bred to hunt with their eyes, not their nose.
It is thought that a Borzoi can see movement up to 3 miles away.
Greyhounds have become a lesser used, but good breed for service dog.

Flying

The Red Baron was shot by someone on the ground.
Amelia Earhart was quoted saying "It seems that no other phase of modern progress can try to maintain such a brimming measure of romance and beauty coupled with utility as does aviation"
Anti-Zepplin fighters typically had more than 2 wings. (Tri wing and Quad-wing)
In the 1950's the US millitary designed a flying saucer, but didn't put it into production.
Zepplins are badass. (No this is a fact. You can't deny it.)

My Mum and Dad introduced my sister and I to Star Trek the original series in 1985 we used to sit down on a Sunday at midday with our lunch and watch Star Trek. My favourite Captain is Captain James. T. Kirk. Who is played by William Shatner. I like watching Star Trek the original series and Star Trek the Next Generation I like William Riker played by Jonathan Franks and Data with his cat Spot played by Brent Spiner who also was in Independence Day. I started my Star Trek memrobillia in 1985. The Enterprise D was destroyed in Star Trek Generations. I also like Captain Jean-Luc Picard played by Patrick Stewart who also is in X-men.

This week I'm revisiting my Beatles interest and cycling into electrochemical events.

Beatles:

1. The version of "Love Me Do" that has tambourine on the track - Ringo does not play drums, they were performed instead by a session musician named Andy White, not to be confused with occasional Plastic Ono Band drummer and longtime Yes member Alan White. After fulfilling that session Andy White went on to drum on Tom Jones's "It's Not Unusual". Side note, later member of Tom Jones's band and Manfred Mann's Earth Band Chris Slade was a member of AC-DC during the recording and subsequent world tour for their album "The Razor's Edge".

2. "I Am The Walrus" was written by John Lennon after a series of LSD trips and pasted together after he was unsuccessful at expanding the several short song ideas on their own. The latter verses were included to sabotage a schoolteacher at his alma mater's assigning pupils to analyze Beatles lyrics, which he learned of when a student at Quarry Bank school wrote a letter to him.

3. "Sergeant Pepper" came into being when Paul McCartney misheard road manager Mal Evans's request to be passed the "salt and pepper".

4. "Get Back" is the only track to be credited on record labeling for the work of an outside musician; Billy Preston. Eric Clapton played lead on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" but was not credited.

5. "She's Leaving Home" was not scored by producer George Martin, but rather by Mike Leander. Martin was unavailable but conducted the session upon his return. Incidentally, the harp played by Sheila Bromberg marks the first occasion of a female musician playing on a Beatles session.

~ Still data-diving on the electrochemical interest ~

Johnny Depp

1. He has collaborated with Tim Burton on 8 movies: Edward Scissorhands (1990, title character), Ed Wood (1994, title character), Sleepy Hollow (1999, Ichabod Crane), Corpse Bride (2005, Victor Van Dort), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005, Willy Wonka), Sweeney Todd (2007, title character), Alice in Wonderland (2010, Mad Hatter) and Dark Shadows (2012, Barnabas Collins)

2. He has collaborated with Gore Verbinski on 3 (sets of) movies: 3 out of 4 of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Rango, and the upcoming Lone Ranger

3. Guest starred in an episode of Spongebob called "Spongebob vs. The Big One"

4. Has two children named Jack and Lily-Rose

5. When asked if Jack Sparrow was gay, he allegedly replied "All of my characters are gay."

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

1. The main characters were originally supposed be ponies from previous generations but Hasbro lost the rights to use them, so they had to be changed.

2. The original ponies that the FiM ones were based off of? Twilight Twinkle = Twilight Sparkle, Glory = Rarity, Surprise = Pinkie Pie, Firefly = Rainbow Dash, Posey = Fluttershy. Applejack has remained the same.

3. Vinyl Scratch, aka DJ P0n-3, the immensely popular DJ pony, only gets about 3 seconds of screentime.

4. Pinkie Pie's song "Smile, Smile, Smile" was leaked onto the Internet several months before the episode it was featured in aired.

5. The pony Photo Finish is based off of fashion mogul Anna Wintour, in spite of the popular belief that she is based on Lady Gaga.

Adventure Time

1. In the pilot, Finn's name is Pen and he has a different character design and voice actor than Finn does in the series proper.

2. Pen's voice actor in the pilot was Zach Shada, while Finn is voiced by Zach's younger brother, Jeremy Shada.

3. Embryo Princess was originally called Abortion Princess, but this was deemed too controversial so the name was changed.

4. In a special behind-the-scenes look at the episode "What Was Missing", the narrator hinted that Princess Bubblegum and Marceline (both female characters) could be a couple. This featurette was pulled from official sources and the narrator was fired.

5. The setting of Adventure Time, called the Land of Ooo, is actually a post-apocalyptic version of Earth. The Earth was decimated in a war called the Great Mushroom War.

I love programming :)

Switch/Select Case statements tend to be more efficient than if statements when 5 or more checks are required.

C# is Microsoft's replacement for Java

Microsoft made a form of Java that compiled into IL(Intermediate Language) but was sued for it. (F# I believe)

C++ is C plus classes

Programming used to only be used by mathematicians who would read and write binary code in order to make program related functionality. They would use a special keyboard and construct binary lines using 8 switches that could toggle on or off (1 or 0 for the presence or absense of power) which could be used to send a computer's CPU an instruction.

Fairy tales:

1) Fairy tales are usually split into two types- oral folk tales and literary (written) fairy tales. I usually split the second type down further into 'literary retellings of oral folk tales' and 'original fairy tales influenced by folk/mythic ideas'.

2) Fairy tales are characterized by some element of the supernatural or mythic and usually for a linear (not complex) structure.

3) Characters in fairy tales are minimal and usually archetypal and not psychologically complex.

4) Fairy tales do not always involve fairies, and often (most of them) don't!

5) Fairy tales work as a 'blueprint' or map that the reader can use to interpret/explore their own experiences and every reading of a fairy tale is different.

Formula One:

1) Although Mika Hakkinen only won two championships in 1998 and 1999 (and was only driving as a championship contender from 1998-2000), Michael Schumacher names him as the toughest driver to beat.

2) Most of the championship contenders' cars in the last 15 years were designed by Adrian Newey (ie usually Ferrari v a Newey-designed car).

3) Although it has had a lot of criticism, DRS has increased the amount of overtaking on the track, even if it is 'simulated', and does have to be managed by driver skill.

4) One of the most exciting races in recent history was Belgium 1998 where 13 cars were involved in a first lap collision sparked by David Coulthard and the race had to be restarted. Michael Schumacher was leading 8 remaining cars on on lap 24 when he came up to lap Coulthard, but hit the back of his car and took himself out (one of my favourite commentary lines from Murray Walker: "OH GOD!"). The race finished with Damon Hill winning for Jordan.

5) F1 is a male-dominated sport but more female drivers are now being offered test drives.

I love cars in general, but as my next complete build will be a 1989-94 Geo Metro set up for hypermiling (maximizing fuel economy), I'll talk about that here.

1. Introduced in 1989 as the replacement for the Chevy Sprint.

2. The ultra-efficient Metro XFI model was EPA rated at 53 mpg city and 58 mpg hwy (better than any current hybrid)

3. Weighs 1623lbs for the base model (1989-94 2 door XFI hatchback), or about 200 lbs less than a Smart Fortwo

4. Powered by the Suzuki G10 3 cylinder engine with 49 or 55 hp and 58 ft/lbs of torque

5. It was not available with power steering.

2. Russia suffered the most casualties in the war - approximately 21 million people.

3. The US Army had more ships during WWII than the US Navy.

4. It's estimated that 50-70 million people died in total during WWII.

5. The first air raid in London was on September 7th 1940 and lasted until May 1941.

3. The protagonist of the Graveyard Book, Bod, is Neil Gaiman's favourite of his protagonists.

4. Neil Gaiman has written a second Doctor Who episode other than the Doctor's Wife.

5. Neil Gaiman has written a book called The Ocean at the End of the Lane which will come out in the US and the UK on June 18th 2013.

Doctor Who

1. Doctor Who started in 1963.

2. The eleven actors who have played the Doctor at the time of this post are in order William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith.

3. The Caves of Androzani, Peter Davison's final adventure as the Fifth Doctor, was voted the most popular Doctor Who story by fans. In second place was Blink.

James Bond Movies

1. Thunderball was supposed to be the first movie.

2. John F Kennedy's favorite James Bond book was from Russia with love which is why it was the second movie.

3. The longest gap between 2 movies is 6 years. Licence to kill (1989)-Goldeneye (1995)

4. Roger Moore is the longest serving James Bond (7 movies). In 1985 when playing James Bond for the last time in A view to a kill he was 57.

5. Casino Royale is Flemming's first James Bond Book but only came out in 2006 due to the fact that Columbia pictures rather than Eon owned the production rights. These rights were owned from 1967 in which David Niven played James Bond in the 1967 unofficial version of Casino Royale.

5 facts seems very limiting :D

1. I was born in 87, Arnold Schartzneggar was born in 47, vin diesel in 67, dolph lundgren in 57, george carlin in 37, denis leary in 57, louis ck in 67, edward james almose in 47, and the list goes on. I have a fancination with ages if you can't tell.

2. Although people think of sister countries as having very similar populations it's totally untrue. Canada has 1/10th the population of the usa, china is ten times japan's population, england has the same 10 to 1 with scotland, Kazahkstan and russia now are considered the true eurasian states have again the same 10-1 deal. Austria and germany have a 1-10 despite historically austria being seen as the superior.

3. In NA, cities typically have 1 sports franchise per 1-2 million people. So cities toronto has 3 teams for 6 million, Portland and vancouver have 1 each for 2 mill and the trend continues.

4. In approx 1965 the end of the baby boomers. Modern rock and roll was born. Despite the massive generational changes in the era before, modern rock music has changes relatively minorly in the last 47 years. Elvis was outdated by 1970 only 15 years into his fame, yet led zepplin, black sabbath, pink floyd, and the beatles have been the defacto godfathers of rock and roll for over 25 years.

5. Over the course of history there have been some important paradigm shifts that have gone unnoticed. Although suburbs and other semi urban lifestyles have only truly been possible since the 1950's, modern inner city life hasn't changed in over 100 years. Before modern sanitation and health standards cities where considered ghetto's due to the lack of sewage systems and modern hygiene. It's strange to note that one could go back 100 years and live a normal lifestyle yet if they went back 200 years, they'd likely be sick with disease.

Ethology/primatology.

1. Monkeys are typically divided into "Old World" monkeys and "New World" monkeys.

2. Male bonobos have the biggest "male organs" out of any of the primates.

3. Chimpanzees are more closely related to humans than to any of the other great apes.

4. Primates have complex and nuanced social structures, and there is no one "mating system" that encompasses them all (And no, all females are NOT hopeless attracted to "bad boy alpha males." People who insist on repeating this fallacy are morons. Yes, this means you. ).

5. Chimpanzees, dolphins, and some gorillas are the only animals besides humans that can pass the "mirror test."

Enjoy!!
