Not really, and for all I know I am there already.....or at least I might as well be since that's how I feel.

The threat of eternal damnation and suffering is the only thing keeps a lot (not all) of people on the straight and narrow.
That alone makes it a good thing and what works works.
Never mind the fact that people shouldn't need to be kept in line with fear.

What should keep people in line, then?

Just being "good" isn't going to cut it because "good" is too ambiguous.
It really shouldn't need to be explained any further than that.

People should be able to just stay in line by treating others how they wish to be treated, but apparently that's far too difficult for humans to do. Even WITH all the fear and BS from religion, people still treat each other like s**t, if not more so, because religion creates at least two "cliques:" The believers and the non-believers... And the non-believers are viewed as these disgusting pieces of s**t who need to be saved. Then the believers torture the non-believers in an attempt to make them convert... YAY, religion.

What do you expect when you're made with free will and then told how to act?
