I didn't expect my cat to really understand/care about what I was doing when I was self harming, but he got upset and meowed + pawed at me to stop me. Even though I feel guilty about it I'm very grateful he did that since I haven't self harmed since. I love him so much.

That's probably even better, at least as long as it lasts and the guilt doesn't make things worse.

It might be good to try to put a few alternatives to cutting in place, combined with your cat's care.

Why I recommend a punching bag is that you do get to hurt yourself to an extent, but it's limited and controlled. It's also a pretty handy skill to have, just in case.
