Nero was the beast and the Book of Revelations is totally bogus. It was written by John of Patmos and god only knows what kind of mushrooms he nibbled.

In all seriousness, though, the bizarre language and imagery in Revelations comes from the apocryphal language of Persia, very probably to hide the meaning the author was trying to convey from the Roman authorities. After all, calling the emperor the Beast could very well get you nailed to a cross.
As I've stated before, both Luther and Calvin personally doubted if Revelations was even divinely inspired. And their theological descendents in mainline Protestantism today consider it to be a very minor book of the Bible, concerning things that have already transpired, rather than of future events. It was only in comparatively modern times that evangelicals had chosen to make the book the center piece of their theology.
