I've been receiving messages from someone who claims that I have been making negative comments specifically about that person. I can not recall any such instance, and the person has not provided any details of any specific incident, yet the "cease and desist" messages continue.

Upon seeking advice, the following opinions were given:

- The person is flirting with me in a way that's commonly referred to as 'Negging'.

- The person is trying to provoke me into an open confrontation that would lead to my censure and punishment.

- The person is obsessed with being persecuted and sees a personal attack in every word and gesture.

- The person is desperate for attention and is trolling for same.

The best advice so far has been:

- Ignore the person and wait for the messages to stop.

- Keep copies of every message sent by the person.

- Report any physical attacks or acts of vandalism.

Thoughts? Opinions?

The person is a stranger. I do not know the stranger's name.

That is CREEPY,you are being stalked. If you think you or your family are in physical danger, talk to the cops.Sometimes this isn't much help,Some creeps know just how far they can go without getting arrested.Stay safe and good luck.

The stranger does not fit the 'stalker' profile. One of the people I spoke to is a cop. There is not much the police can do unless the person makes a direct and specific threat or commits an act of vandalism or violence.

I'm not worried. This has happened before. Almost daily in grade school, less often in college, not very often at all in the military, and only about once a year while on the job. Bullying is common, but has grown less frequent as I've grown older.

I suspect that they all stopped their silly little kid games once they realized that I was not going to play. I expect this case to be no different.

It could be spam to see if this is a live email address. It could be a con, say vaguely similar to Spanish Prisoner.

The person could just be effing with you, without any more thought into it than that.

And I think the standard, baseline approach, yes, is to ignore it.

So ... the person may see me as a potential "Live One" ... but for what purpose, I wonder ...

That is my first and foremost opinion. The person may simply have nothing better to do than to mess with others. What a sad way to express one's self ... very, very sad ... for them.

Yeah ... they're not worth the time or the effort to try to engage them in a dialogue ... it's their problem, not mine.

Thanks, everybody!

Instead of the classic '80% Off Viagra,' maybe this is an attempt to draw in people who are reasonable (who are likely to take seriously the claim that they engaged in personal attack).

At least it's (presumably) not a bizarre answering machine message, as in a Seinfeld episode I saw recently:
