For example, when I eat hot, chocolate 'Gu' puddings, the melted chocolate centre tastes like burnt melted cheese. Also, Richmond sausages taste a bit like banana and depending on the brand of coffee, sometimes black coffee smells and tastes like gravy.

I just wondered if anyone else has ever experienced this.

Interesting! If you don't mind me asking, what are their similar examples?

I haven't found another person who has experienced this yet, so I am very interested :).

I have that sometimes, to a small extent. The same with smells. I say something like "this tastes/smells like XY" and everybody is like "...what? Totally not".

I wonder whether my sense of taste/smell is better or worse. :?

I guess mine isn't to a large extent really as I didn't give many examples, and there probably aren't many more.

I wonder what causes this?

I've only reallynoticed this as an adult though. When I was a child, I remember I couldn't have Ribena because it used to taste like the smell of a farm, but other than that, I didn't have any examples to share.

With my kids it is more often a smell thing. I started another thread where I explained that my son thinks cheeseburgers smell like vomit. He has noted this with other things before...things smelling like something they are not.

My daughter says that many things that are fairly benign in flavor and well tolerated by most (spaghetti and meatballs, for example) taste how rotten things smell. She won't even eat some kinds of candy because she thinks they taste disgusting. I am not sure what she would say they taste like, but it is not what most people taste when they eat it. So it is not exactly like your scenario where something tastes like an identifiable thing that it is not. It is more that for whatever reason, I do not think she perceives particular blends of flavors the way others do.

Yeah, some foods do have odd tastes like those of other food. Other people seem confused if I tell them what something tastes like, a few weeks ago I had a victory on this front though, when my brother said he tasted something that bothered me as well! Though, he said it was just a slight taste when for me it was overpowering and ruined the food.
But for me this is still probably different from yours as it's more a part of generally sensing these horrible sidetastes in food, many of which I can't describe and connect to anything else I've tasted (expect possibly some awful taste I've tasted in some other food) I hate this so much, because sometimes it happens to me that something I previously enjoyed changes taste for no apparent reason (sometimes I think it might be because they changed the recipe or something, as when these cookies I used to like started tasting awful they had done that. No one else tasted anything wrong with them, of course. Sometimes I wonder if there's just something wrong with my sense of taste like this example ->), earlier this year I was at a restaurant and was eager to get to eating my favorite food...but...it didn't taste anything like it did before. It tasted very strongly like sour cream & onion chips, which was truly awful. It was my favorite food but it's now ruined, forever. This has been happening to many foods throughout my life, but it seems to be increasing in frequency, which is worrisome so I am afraid that someday there won't be anything left in the world that tastes good to me.
Something random, for a few months now our fridge and freezer have been awful, anything that is put in either of them is infused with this horrible smell, or sometimes even taste. Good side? I haven't been eating nearly as much candy (and so the rest of my family have gotten a lot of candy from me haha).

With me, it's not taste, instead it's smells.
i.e. Mac and cheese smelling like cheeseburgers.

Since my sense of smell is so bad, the number one thing that can turn me off about food is the consistency. If it has the wrong consistency for whatever it is supposed to be, it is bad.

I completely quit eating at one Chinese restaurant because they switched from a normal Sweet and Source sauce to one that was very runny. I couldn't take that and so I quit eating there.

I think some leaf veggies and spring onions taste like certain types of dolls.

I used the wrong word there. Instead of "consistency", it should have been "texture". The above should have read as:

I have a history of temporal lobe epilepsy so I have a lot of odd sensations like these. Sorry to be TMI but a day or night before I get my period I will eat say a Promite toast and it takes like french toast.

How do you know what dolls taste like? Or do you mean rolls?

I should've written more clearly. I meant the smell of certain types of dolls (probably made of some kind of plastic or something) is very similar to the taste/smell of spring onions.

I haven't noticed finding anything similar which other people don't think are similar, but I have always had some weird food preferences. The thing I miss most about being veggie is McDonalds burgers, far more than any higher quality expensive meat products. I have never been able to acquire the taste of wine or beer, and cider is limited to the very sweet fruity ones. I'm absolutely baffled as to why most people prefer their apple and grape juice horrendously gone off. And pizza - Dominos is my favourite, I'll tolerate very cheap supermarket pizza, but keep the proper gourmet Italian stuff well away!
