The Mayans were excellent naked eye astronomers (they never had telescope) and they had a positional number system with base 20. They were several light-years ahead of Europe which was still using alphabet based number systems (Greek and Roman) until about the 15 th century (c.e.) when they finally borrowed the base ten system from India (by way the the Muslim scholars).
