Apparently, the gents in Latin America have to do things that we just don't do in North America any more.

Here is an article relevant to the topic, but on dating in Mexico:

http://www.expatdailynews.com/2010/05/h ... -girl.html

Quote:
....The first thing you need to realize is that Mexican woman are more used to being spoiled by their man. You will be expected to pay for dinner, and she may take great offense at the idea of splitting the bill. If you want to get to date number two, you will need to get in the habit of opening doors, offering her your coat if you are cold, and walking on the street side of the sidewalk, preferably holding her hand, even if you just met her.

Mexican girls are taught from early on to play up their femininity, and you are expected to notice her efforts. She is probably used to getting cat-called a million times a day as she walks down the street, so you will need to one-up those efforts, while coming across as sincere and respectful. (Yeah, I know, good luck).

To do so, basically pretend you are in a bad soap opera, and say all of the corny things that you would never say back home for fear of cracking up laughing. Then you will begin to hit the mark of what she is used to. “Mi tesoro, mi cielo, mi vida, te amo tanto, mi princesa!” (‘Oh, my treasure, my heaven, my life – I love you so much, my princess!’). This could be deemed appropriate talk in the first ten minutes of meeting each other if things are going well. Try to do this with a straight face, while gazing passionately into her eyes and caressing her cheek. As hard as it may be to believe, this is not overkill. Not even close.

Public displays of attention also take on a whole new meaning in Latin America. I have seen people full on making-out on the bus more times than I can count, and no one seems to notice or care. It’s normal. As a Latin friend once shared with me, “At least in Latin America you can tell when a girl is with her boyfriend. It’s obvious. In the US, you never know if its her brother she is with or what! They barely even touch walking down the road!” So do not be shy. Take her hand, kiss her passionately, nuzzle her neck…and it doesn’t matter if you are waiting in line at the grocery store together, or at her little sister’s recital. It always seems to be appropriate somehow.....

Maybe some North American ladies still like this stuff, but won't admit it.

When I was in that crappy casino there were three Latino men there that made quite a fuss over me.They were very sweet. To this day I regret not giving the one my phone number when he asked for it.Story of my life. They were so much nicer than the Anglo dude that asked me if I liked hot, dirty, sex. The Latino men's comment in unison was that I was"beeyuoteful". Maybe I'll go to Mexico, they like short plump women.Maybe brush up on my Spanish. But there's also a large Hispanic community a few hours from here, hmmmmm.Might be worth a drive.

Looks like a vote for Latin style over the Hyperlexian approach.

Most(not all) American men prefer skinny girls.Latinos like some extra softness. The lady dancers don't look like they are anorexic.
And my daughter said the best looking men she's ever seen were in Puerto Rico and Brazil.

The video that I posted above includes some Black American women complaining about Black American men going to Brazil to enjoy themselves.

I suspect that, in spite of all of our militant feminism, some of our ladies, somewhere deep down, would really like a man to put her on a pedestal and treat her as Latin American men treat their women.

Instead of sitting home frustrated (like the women in the video), more of our women should go abroad, relax and enjoy their lives.

I'm not sure if the movie would be fully classified as a Chick Flick. The American men do come off as pasty, unappealing, passionless, and ridiculous. There

To be honest, if she's clear about what she wants (and she isn't sending mixed messages), you shouldn't say 'no' yourself unless you don't want to.

Frankly, those kinds of women seem so aggressive that it's best leaving them alone to be permanently single. I could never be with someone like that.

The movie did exaggerate the stereotypes a bit.

Yesterday I was talking with a couple of female cousins; at one point we started talking about dating, and one of their biggest complaints was that many men gave up way too easily, as opposed to the usual complaint of them being too persistant.

Ah, so Anglophone-style Puritanism is making its way to South America, is it?

No, in the contrary; here men are expected to chase for a fair bit and win her over even if the woman says no at first (which apparently is not uncommon). And I live in a very conservative city

Well, why are the men giving up so easily now?

I wouldn't know. Impatience? Shyness? Pessimism? it probably varies

That could be. Has there been a sudden change in diet?

Or, maybe the gents are spending more time in front of a computer these days?

I'm not surprised. The last 2 I dated from more conservative places needed a lot more encouragement and reciprocation than I would consider normal. Maybe it's a conservative thing. Whatever it is - it is a pain in the ass.
