Is this rambling still going on? Jeez, now I'm glad I just picked "infectious laughter" as topic rather than schadenfreude, the butthurt-level probably would've been off the charts with the latter

I don't understand people who don't post on a thread and yet resent others who do

Where's the logic?

If you have something 'better' to say, say it

See...that is an example of something that I would have not responded to.

Nessa, my defense is that I do not care what mean people think or say. It has no effect on me. It's their issue, not mine.

I know what you mean, I just wanted an explanation

People like this rarely ever give one though so you're probably right to ignore them

Really, he doesn't owe one.

And the truth is, we are very off topic at this point. It's his thread, so if he doesn't like that, he is entitled to comment on it.

Sorry about the intrusion into your thread. It didn't seem to be one in which you were seeking a true, in-depth discussion about mirror neurons, so I didn't think anyone would mind.

I see this all the time on here though

people starting threads, abandoning them, then getting worked up when someone's having an interesting conversation that doesn't involve them

it's the forum equivalent of throwing toys out of the pram

so Mirror Neurons - anything interesting to say about them OP?

It wasn't funny and his laughter was really annoying; put on for the camera I'd say. He sounded the type to laugh at just about anything, including someone being horribly murdered right in front of him. Unpleasant person. A 'Beavis & Butthead' type
is how I'd categorise him. I couldn't get far away enough from a person like this.

My mirror neurons are more likely to work if it's a sad situation I'm watching as my humour is far too precise to find a lot of things funny. I don't do the 'laughing just because everyone else is' thing with humour - it has to be funny before I'll laugh. In social situations where you're expected to find something amusing I can fake amusement but not loud laughter.

Sounded genuine to me. I've laughed at worse things.

To be fair...you only left for 10 minutes! I would imagine that not everyone is spending their entire Saturday afternoon glued to WP.

I shouldn't be either.

Must unglue myself! LOL!

You're truly the one keeping this forum alive ;)

Seriously though, the whole discussion about how much you hate someone's laughter and society in general doesn't seem to add up to anything relevant or serve any purpose.

This isn't "vent whatever emotional conflict just happens to go through your mind". The thread's based on a simple question about how the people here would describe their own ability to mirror emotions, or lack thereof.

No. I mean I have laundry to do. A house to clean. A project to work on for my job. It's nice outside, so I'd like to take a walk. My cat needs to be groomed. There are a few things that I need to pick up from the grocery store. I am in the middle of 3 books. I should finish at least one. I'd like to sew my daughter some new summer clothes. My son has some homework he needs help with. That kind of stuff.

And mostly, sitting in front of the computer is doing nothing to rid me of the extra 50 pounds I have collected over the years! LOL!

Somehow, I think many people did not pick that up. It seemed like many people just concluded they did not find the goat funny.

Yeah, I probably should've just added a soundfile of laughter/yawning or anything else that's usually mirrored, but I didn't really expect the discussion to be completely derailed because of that stupid goat

Actually, I derailed it when someone called the goat-laugher an idiot. Don't blame it on the goat...he's innocent! LOL!

The in game footage did not help. I play fps games, so I tend to get focused when I see one. This would have been a better test for me:

Shouldn't that be "so Mirror Neurons - anything interesting to say about them that has any scientific validity OP?"

I didn't laugh at the video, I do however laugh when I see others laughing in person. I also cry when I'm around others who are crying for long enough, even though I'm not sad. I don't catch yawns.

They might have been reading a book.
In the time I wasn't here last night, I was reading, playing the piano, having dinner and sleeping.

The controversial "broken mirror" hypothesis is brought up every once in a while, so what do you think about it?

Sympathetic/infectious laughter, for instance. How do you feel about the infamous laddergoat-video? (the relevant part starts about 20 into the video).

I watched the video for a couple of minutes, the laughter scared me it was weird, loud and sounded like someone on drugs. I couldn't tell what they were laughing at, or whether this was a real life video or some sort of realistic CGI, but I thought maybe something cruel happened to the goat and I stopped watching it as I didn't like it.

Are mirror neurons supposed to be about mirroring peoples' actions and emotions?

One thing that I do, is when I'm watching something on TV I do sometimes mirror the expressions of the people on the screen, and it's something others have made fun of me for before. If something is e.g. a tense/scary moment, I will also frown and look horrified sometimes. I get drawn into things on TV.

I don't know if that's to do with what you refer to.
