I recognize members by their avatars. To me, the poster is the avatar.

Usually avatar, but in Makayla's case it's usually both.

Avatar before name. As for OP you had the guy in the forest when I first joined and when you changed it to ziggy I didn't recognize you till someone had quoted you and then I went back to look at your original post.

Avatar.

I'm very bad at remembering names.

Both

I make a connection between the name and avatar picture of a few members, to the extent that
if you showed me their avatar I could say who they were but with a lot of members I might
recognise the avatar as one I've seen before and retain a memory of their posting style/personality,
but I couldn't necessarily remember their member name

I tend to go mainly on knowledge of a member's past posting history and if I haven't come across them
before I would form an initial opinion of them from their avatar picture and then add to this by looking at their
posting content and style

I do think that people who post photos are in danger of overshadowing the content of their posts with
their visual image

I don't see why it's so important to have a photo or picture - it seems like a striving to create an identity/impression
but surely what you post is meant to do that?

I will remember a username or an avatar I find appealing but identifying another user is deeper than that for me. If somebody says something interesting or getd my attention, then there's a stronger chance I will remember who they are.

Name and avatar. Of course I can't remember all I've met, but changing the avatar makes it more difficult. Sometimes it's nice to see though how avatars evolve over time. Mine expresses an age at which I was still happy and clean.

A bit of both.

I still struggle to tell the difference between various "cat" users.

Both, but avatar first. If I see an avatar I don't recognize, I'll go to the name. If I don't recognize either, it's usually somebody who just joined, somebody who doesn't post a lot, or somebody who doesn't post a lot in the sections of the forum where I'm most active. I always refer to posters (in my head) by name, though.

At first, it's just the avatar. It takes me a while to connect avatar to username. But, for the more regular posters, I'll get their names fairly quickly. If someone changes their avatar before I've had a chance to connect it to their username, I'll never recognise them again. I've only had 3 avatars since I joined, as I wouldn't like to confuse new users, if they have the same way of recognising members as I do.

Names before avatars - in some instances I am more familiar with people's old avatars than their current ones.

Same here, but for me it's not that important who posted what.

I'd also have to add that I tend to also recognize people by their face rather than their name in real life too. I'm really bad at learning and remembering names.

I've probably had over fifty avatars by now. They're just too fun to play with, and I really don't like the idea of being identified with a certain image. No avatar is just blah, though.
