It's a shame for the people who really liked this show but I disliked it it and was very disappointed by it.
I'm a lifelong Matt Groenig fan. I bought all of his Life In Hell books through the 80's and was delighted when he showed up on the Tracey Ullman show with the embryonic Simpsons bits. Simpsons was every bit as good as Life In Hell and I have been a faithful viewer since it was a part of Tracey Ullman. So naturally I had high hopes for Futurama. I breathlessly waited for the first episode.
It was so unfunny that I was just staggered. I thought it might be a fluke or having trouble hitting its' stride. I watched the next few episodes hoping it would become funny but it just never did. Every joke seemed so forced and the situations were never brilliant observations like they were in Simpsons or Life In Hell. It was as though the mere fact it was taking place in the future and with a cyclops girl and other physically odd characters was supposed to be inherently funny. But it just wasn't funny. No witty observations. No social commentary. No great jokes. It clearly has a core following but I'm not in it despite slavish devotion to everything else Groenig did.
For the record I don't watch Honey Boo Boo, Teen Mom or any other reality show. I like comedy but laughing at real people screwing up their lives just seems creepy.
I really like it. With that, I'm not bothered by it being cancelled (ha, 3rd time now), as what's been made has been immensely rewatchable. Besides, if they feel they've got stories left to tell, they can just make some more DVD movies.
It's been on borrowed time since its inception, IMO. It doesn't seem to be for most people.
