Anyone want to help a very inexperienced computer person figure out if someone has spyware/rootkit on my computer ?

I got a message the other day from my security Avast, the paid one not the free one and they said they detected a possibly malicious rootkit . Had no idea what that meant but stated a scan then had to shut down computer before it was done and now can't find it to finish the scan ? I tried to google the topic but most of the suggestions were way over my head and sounded like it would be to difficult to detect anyway .

Anyone have any experience with keystroke type rootkit , Someone told me it is similar to what some parents use to see what their kids are doing on their computers . Also, I think I may know who is doing this and would like to be able to see what they are doing on their computer to know for sure if they are spying on me .

Thanks for any suggestions . I would be willing to pay for a service if any one can suggest one I can trusts...worried about using one that will actually be spying on me ,,,,because now I am super paranoid and hate this feeling /

I prefer to use this boot virus removal tool:

http://support.kaspersky.com/8092

This link has an iso file and a tool to install it to a blank usb drive. Or you can just download the iso and burn it to a cd or dvd/

Imgburn works well if you need burning software.

It lets you boot from that disk or usb and destroy viruses without starting the system up at all/

-you might need to hold f12 or delete at the startup to change the boot settings..

Thanks you all...I ran a full malwarebytes last night...3 hours and they found nothing . Still trying to figure out how to finish the rootkit scan for avast...they catch a lot of stuff for me and are the ones who first warned me so figure they must know something . Do you think that this could be related to my recent reinstal of an wifi HP printer ? It does access my laptop, so maybe Avast confused it as possible spyware > (though I installed it before and never got the message so...?)

I will try the second suggestion tonight and see if they can see anything . I hate to be this paranoid but besides the message from Avast about the possible rootkit...someone said some things that I don't know how they could have known unless they were reading my email or facebook messages . It was a bit unnnerving .

Thanks again

Definitely stay away from banking info and try not to access the computer till you fix it.

Info theft is nasty stuff... I doubt the printer has anything to do with it.
