I understand Keith Olbermann had taken a liking to him, announcing his time even when Trickle had done badly. Olbermann absolutely loved that name.

New York Times

Sounds like he may have had a degenerative disease. Sad story. Odd name to go by, Richie would have been better.

For those not wanting to research or read articles heres my short verson.

Trickle won alot races, over 1,000 if I recall correct, most being in his local area and was the oldest rookie of the year in NASCAR's Winston Cup series(the premier one) at 47 I beleave, a very talented driver, could have been one of the great legends of the sport had he moved up 15-20 years sooner. Odd names and odd nick names were all too common in his day in the sport of stock car racing, if you want to laugh look it up, someone actually went by Coo Coo for example.

He drove to the cemetery his grand daughter was barried at and called the local authorities to report a dead body and it would be his, apperently he never got over her death. A very sad and extreamly depressing way to end such a great life. I beleave he was 71.
