It was wonderful. I've read Eva Luna, Daughter of Fortune and now The House of the Spirits. Isabel Allende is a hilarious and original writer.

Cemetery Dance: Issue 78

Not a book, but a horror fiction magazine. I had thought they must have gone out of business, or that my subscription had ended, because I hadn't gotten an issue in the mail for ages. Turns out they were down for a time, but are back up again. Pretty good short fiction.

"Queen of Spades and Other Stories" by Alexander Pushkin I liked all of the short short stories in this very slim Dover Publications edition; one was a lot like one of Poe's shorts and the others were a mix of comedy and horror, the stories never turn out to mix the genre you thought they would by the end.

The other book is "Extracts From the Marine Practice of Physic and Surgery" by William Northcote, about how gunshot wounds, perform amputations etc. at sea in the late 18th century. It was in use during the American Revolution and it is interesting to see what doctors at the time thought was the best way to treat patients.

Son Of The White Wolf, by Robert E. Howard.

Anthology of stories of Howard's lesser know, non Conan tales, involving an American adventurer in Arabia of yesteryear, called El Borak, fighting to the death both Bedouin raiders and western bandits. Nobody can equal Howard in intensity and power of description on the written page.
