Blaze, by Stephen King, writing as Richard Bachmann.

Imagine Lenny and George from Of Mice And Men as petty criminals Blaze and George, with George being dead and just living on in Blaze's imagination, and you have the beginnings of this book. Looking to carry out the one big score he and George had dreamed of, Blaze plans to kidnap a baby from a wealthy family. Except Blaze is a flaming idiot, and even the imaginary George tries to warn him from preceding. So far so good.

Morning coffee book: ‘The Emperors New Mind’ by Roger Penrose, overview of mathematics, classical physics and quantum physics as they relate to computer algorithms. Published 1989 so v. out of date, but interesting nonetheless.

Sunday bath book: ‘The World Turned Upside Down’ by Christopher Hill, mid-depth level historical analysis of radical grassroots Christian sects and their beliefs during the English Civil War. Fascinating read revisiting the period that first sparked my interest in history.

Also: Alfred Mann’s abridged translation of ‘Gradus Ad Parnassum’ by Joseph Fux and ‘Homophonic Forms’ by Percy Goetschius, both guides to writing classical music: because it’s fun!

I've just finished 'The Floating Theatre' by Martha Conway (named 'The Underground River in the USA), and I really enjoyed it!

It's set on the Mississippi River in the 19th century and explores the issue of slavery and the different laws between the southern and northern states. While reading I found the main character made so much sense, to the point I was sure she was autistic- and then I came across a post on the author's blog that confirmed the character is meant to be! :lol:
