What bothers me is the article implies that what caused the child to lash out was his AS, and not something else, which is more likely the cause of this. Was the child being threatened by the victim? There is so much missing from this article, and it puts a bad light on AS children in schools.

My 12 year old son is mainstreamed, and has been since Kindergarten. He has AS. While he may not be incredibly popular, he enjoys being there, and for the most part, the other kids either protect him or work with him to understand him better. A LOT of that is facilitated by the staff at his school, who know him and work with him as well as the other students. We couldn't be more pleased, not to mention surprised, how well his middle school year is shaping up.

It would be better, I think, if the fact that the child has AS was not so much the mentioned factor of why this happened; but mentioned more as an afterthought because AS didn't drive this child to do this. Something else did, and his AS complicated the issue.

This should be a wake up call to educators and more specifically administrators who don't really consider the special needs students in their care. It probably won't though. It WILL scare other parents whose kids have children who are quirky in their classes, though. I can see parents of children who were in my son's class reading this and remembering my son and thinking that he was a threat to their kids. Nothing could have been further from the truth.

This IS incredibly sad, and my heart goes out to the family of James Alenson, but I'm angry about the spin this story has on it. This incident is not and should not be defined by AS, nor should it be portrayed in that manner.

hmm.

yer right.

But you have to wonder about the family then. that is always an underlying(and possible) factor.

The classmeate must have been pestering him to no end, by bullying him, or calling him ret*d. Maybe he wanted to prove that he was too smart to take his garbage.

I also am displeased with the news story being spun around the fact the boy has AS. His other problems were not catalogued. And it is likely one of them was the cause. In my experience kids with as well as those without AS develope psychological problems in response to not adapting well to a classroom environment and running afoul of teachers and parents and from the way their peers if left unchecked tend to torment them.
My son who is now 24 was finally diagnosed correctly with AS when he was 16.

.

i live nearby to the regretable incident.
as i followed the story on the day it transpired,
the sirens i heard in the early morning stemmed
from a prompt response to the highschool.
the stabbing happens before classes at 7:20
in the morning, and the poor kid was rushed
to emerson hospital where he was pronounced
dead by 8:12 a.m that day. until i heard about the
older of the two boys being diagnosed with
asperger's, i had assumed a hazing incident
had gone out of control. as a potential juror,
until i perhaps could hear the particulars, i
would automatically assume the sophmore to
be the aggressor.

now i wonder about the meds the kid was on and if this
is due to he perhaps not having a tutor + supervision
inside the special needs program at the high school.
i wonder now if the school system has failed 2 students
totally. this all could be something very preventable.

given that its mandatory by law for
an adolesant to be tried as an adult for the offense
if the act has a degree of pre-meditation, unless
more comes out about all this after the trial,
if only because a freshman has lost his life,
the teen in question may be facing a stiff
sentence. the system in this affluent town has
failed two people. there are two families in
shock and grief, and people leaving candles
at the local highschool. students are now being
given grief therapy... the school has been open for
several hours.

myself? i'm older, i'm middle-aged...
i graduated and went onto college from that
school system. its been two years since my
diagnosis, and more than three decades since
my badly hazed teen years. this all is a tragedy
and may have at its core the question as to where
inside the big highschool both kids fit in...

something went terribly wrong...
its possible to slip thru the cracks in suburbia.

thanks for the first hand account. you're like our own wrongplanet.net field correspondent. 8)

It's a terrible tragedy. I hope this doesn't give the general public the wrong impression about asperger's.

i graduated from the school system in the watergate era 1970s and went
on idealistically to Umass and opted to be an english/journalism major.
this is my home town in turmoil for a freshman has now died inside the
highschool that only recently has had a totally new building constructed to
the tune of 80+ million dollars. the school is first-rate, the teachers are
usually the better people that can be hired. one boy had just moved from
natick due to the reputation the school has. we are talking bedroom suburb of
boston and of a town whose center is still quaintly auld new england town historic...

i did quite well in highschool and seldom dated. i was not one
of the popular kids. my entry into the job market after flunking
out of umass got me very depressed for i did not get into the
swing of things at all well. i'm a hippie, a trekkie and have a lousy
employment history. i've always desired to be a writer. i remember
the hazing i faced. when i was talking about my off and on again feelings
of depression i was then diagnosed with my asperger's. the unique angst
i once had now has a label other than simply that of "neurosis"... i'm an aspie!
upon reading further into the syndrome, i see i was at the age of five being
(although female) greatly like the "little professors" in the original study written up by
the good austrian doctor in 1944. my southern-irish grandmother even compared
my five year old self to her distant kinsman edmund burke, who was known
for his stubborn stances on the issues of his day and his outspoken advocacies.
right now i am inside a whole town that is in shock. the illusion that things
only happen like this in the inner city is in error. we can have students who
slip through the cracks just about anywhere in our educational system.
last friday we had two students who did precisely this... in my hometown.

the pivotal question of the coverage asks a
deep question about the system as it stands.
a tightening of security inside the highschool
is the most likely outcome of all of this... we
won't know what has transpired in full until the
trial is over. as it stands now, any biased coverage
contaminates the potential jury pool that could
be called into a court of law. i'm going to be
following the coverage, and given that this is
a local case, and its high profile... its not going away
in any hurry. we are going to see more opinions
pro and con as to what asperger's is as a syndrome
and what this all means! this is what i think...

the deeper question we should have is over
the description of the support system in place
and as to why it ultimately fails, DESPITE its
being part of one of the better school systems in
my home state. this is my point... as an aspie!
i managed to graduate from that very same
school system and did so without a modern
support system. maybe my issues in college stem
from my having gone into a totally new enviornment...
as a townie, i must ask what went horridly wrong!! !

...not that my inate attitudes and beliefs are identical
to those of tom cruise or the less prominent people in our
society who think like him! i did find this story when online!
http://www.metrowestdailynews.com/homep ... 1094592511

i merely meantion that the group tried to protest outside
the highschool and insted they are sent down to route 27
for classes are now again in session and political activism
can be disruptive if its allowed to be near to if not on a campus.
this all could easily turn into one vast media circus very quickly.

and if you carefully read these herald links, you can see around the edges
the media circus already has started for this extends even into how the media
functions when it hypes an unfolding story. we even have a story about
a "copycatting" incident. i may be calling into question a hypothetical future
status as a juror if i peruse and read nearly all the local press coverage.
