I've thought about becoming more adventurous next year, by going to Rhode Island.

WPers, I need some help. Like where should I go? When should I go? And mostly, how can I do these things within a certain budget? Help!

To me Providnce ( the one big city there) is the place you get off the train to catch the bus,OR get off the plane and rent the car----- that takes you the remaining miles to Cape Cod Massachusetts.

Never thought of the place itsself as a destination.

The whole state is less than a million acres (about the size of the average forest fire in the Rockies). There cant be much there.

But hey- book a room in Providence - and then you can then tool around the rest of southern new england. Cape Cod, Nantucket, martha's vineyard, Mystic Sea Port in Connecticut (if you like sailing ships), Boston, Fall River Massechusetts (real WWII ships, maritime museum, and lizzie borden's home), to name a few things. Sorry I dont know much from Rhode Island itsself.

Most tourists prefer New England in the Summer (like most prefer Florida in the winter), but anytime thats not the dead of winter is okay.

I love southern New England myself- and Rhode Island is actually a pretty good base of operations to tour the region.

It's not; RI is 1,212 square miles, whereas the Vatican is only 0.2.

If you're going there, you simply must visit the places where H.P. Lovecraft lived. I think two of the houses still stand in Providence, and he's buried in the cemetary there.

I recommend touring the Newport mansions, visiting the Roger Williams zoo, and touring the battleships in nearby Fall River, Massachusetts. Those are some of my best memories from the region.

All good ideas.

I've also wanted to see the Pawtucket Red Sox.... what about things to eat?

I haven't eaten at that many restaurants in Rhode Island, but I've been to the Fire and Ice Grill in Providence one time, and it was pretty good. I also recommend visiting Rhode Island sometime near the beginning or the end of the summer so the temperature will be a little cooler and it won't be as humid. From the climate comparison that I found on the internet, it looks like June in Providence is slightly hotter than July in Seattle, on average. I live in Massachusetts, and it's oppressive here right now. I wouldn't want to be doing many outdoor activities in this heat.

Lets put it this way:

If Rhode Island seceded from the Union, and then proceded to get into an all out total war with the nation of Luxembourg- it and Luxembourg would be about evenly matched.

Luxembourg is 999 square miles, and Rhode Island is 1212.

In population and GNP they are roughly similiar (dont have the stats in front of me). I would bet on Rhode Island myself. But the two are in the same "wieght class".

England could squash Rhode Island under its thumb, but even Rhode Island itsself could beat the crap out of a place like either monaco, or the Vatican City.

But put in the boxing ring with Luxembourg it would be an entertaining smack-down.

I might try some coffee milk while I am there, on that note. I ordered a carton of coffee syrup, it's pretty good.
