lTwo possible ways to spend the day.

A)You can spend 8 hours doing an easy yet repetitive data entry task. The catch is that you must do this work in a crowded disco. There is very loud thumping music playing and people are shouting to each other around you. You are sat near the dance floor and there are bright lights continuously flashing. The room is stuffy and the seats are uncomfortable. Other people sit very near to you and occasionally jostle you. They ignore you, however, and let you get on with your repetitive work.

B) You can spend 8 hours in a very quiet peaceful and comfortable room, which is perfectly designed to your sensory needs. You are not provided with anything to do and you are not allowed to take anything into the room with you that may distract or entertain you. Another person is in the room with you. This person has normal social needs, and clearly wants to spend the majority of the day chatting with you.

Which situation would you prefer? I would prefer A. I would be very interested to hear the preferences of others.

I was going to pick B until I learned that another person would be in the room with me. Oh well, I guess A is ore entertaining anyway. I hope I'm getting paid for my data entry task otherwise I pick neither.

I am having a problem with the premise of "B". How is the room very quiet and peaceful if there is a chatty co-worker in there?

B; I'd just tell them to, "Be quiet".

What is the penalty for non-compliance?

If I go with B would torturing my roommate be considered entertainment?

B, definitely B. I think A would probably kill me (not literally, but send me into immediate meltdown). B would just be aggravating and awkward.

If I had to do either as a job every single day I think I would tear out all of my hair.

B, mainly because I find A to be very distracting, and B is only one person, so I'm quite comfortable speaking to that individual.

B without a question.

A I could not cope with in any way shape or form. There's nothing that could be done to make me anything near able to function.

B, I'd struggle majorly with not having my stuff. I have a set of stuff I always carry with me. Not having that would be a huge deal. But at minimum I'd need to have my medication. Between my meds and such, I'd totally be able to entertain myself. Who needs anything complicated to entertain. And no, I'd not talk to them about "small talk" stuff. If they talked about things that interested me, I'd do so, but if not, I'd just stim my way away, all day long.

For me, environment is key.

I would prefer B. It would be nice to get to know someone, and if it's just me and another person and nobody else to distract us, I probably can get myself into a good conversation, and could find a lot more things to say. I know the person might not be compatible for me but anyone can have that issue.

The thing about A is not so much the noise, it's the social obligations that I tend to feel awkward if I don't give into. So if there are people around me all having a good time dancing, drinking and socialising and there's me doing some sort of a logic, creative task, I would feel a little bit uncomfortable because it's the wrong sort of setting, and people would be looking over my shoulder wondering what I am doing and asking me why I am doing that sort of thing in a disco place. I don't know many people who could be able to concentrate on a task like that in a disco environment. You can't see what you're doing properly anyway.

I suppose it would help if you were attracted to them too, then there would be 'other' things you could do as well.

Ignorant people are clearly worse than my sensory issues, because that "neurological disorder" hasn't been cured yet.

I'll take option c - neither of these are suitable, but both A & B seem remarkably similar to some work environments I have been stuck in from time to time.

B. I just cant stand parties. I always need to find a quiet, comfortable corner where i can at least sit down and have some space. Even then i struggle. At a wedding after party i had to bail out after a few hours. I had nowhere to go, as all of the tables were occupied or covered with leftover food (cant stand being near other peoples food) so i just wandered around for about two hours and then just walked home.
