What about 'accidential scientific discoveries'?

Pluto was discovered because an astronomer made an error in math which caused him to look in the wrong place with his telescope.

And then there is that smooth talking Italian sailor who wrangled a government research grant to test his theory that you could cut travel time to the far east if you went west. He stumbled upon a whole certain continent they didnt even know about.
