Yeah, a couple of days ago, I put in a pre-order for a PlayStation3 that will come with GTAV.

I am thinking of purchasing a small library of JRPGs for the system before I pick it up on September 17th, however. I am looking forward to Ni No Kuni and Record of Agarest War 2, in particular.

A part of me wonders if I should have waited until the PS4 came out before I indulged in this purchase. Another part of me is saying that I want to play more JRPGs than what the 360 has to offer, and I also want a Blu-Ray player.

What are some good games to purchase for this console?

There is a good one on PSN if you like Wizardry. Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls.

My recommended games:

Demon's Souls
Dark Souls (2 coming soon)
Trinity Universe
Star Ocean: The Last Hope
Skyrim
Saints Row 3 (4 coming soon)
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
TRINITY: Souls of Zill O'll
Alice: Madness Returns (buy new and get the original too)

This. And the first three released for PS3 are phenomenal as well. I wouldn't recommend All 4 One or Full-Frontal Assault, though.

Saints Row 3 is a good one to get, along with any Bethesda games you can find for it. You'd be missing out if you didn't get LittleBigPlanet 1 and 2, and I'd push you in the direction of getting Heavy Rain and NiNoKuni. :)

Oh, and don't forget any of the Uncharted games, as well as The Last Of Us.

As someone who likes JRPGs, I can't say the PS3 is a platform brimming with good examples of the genre. Ni No Kuni is perhaps the best traditional JRPG on the platform, but I didn't like it due to its overly fussy real time combat and wonky interface that requires you to delve constantly through menus and submenus whilst running circles around enemies.

I second Valkyria Chronicles. That is a fantastic game. But it's more like XCOM or Fire Emblem than a traditional JRPG. Demons Souls and Dark Souls are also great, though tend to lean more towards action.

IMO if you want JRPGs you're best off looking at portable platforms. Both the 3DS and Vita have a couple of good titles and a huge back catalogue.

You can always try purchasing and playing the God of War Saga because it has great five games to keep you entertained at a $40 price.

If JRPG's are your thing then yes Ni No Kuni without a doubt.
Also consider:
Persona 4 Golden
Catherine
Some of the PS1 JRPG's from the PlayStation Store
Cross Edge (sort of Namco X Capcom sequel)
HD rereleases of FFX, X-2, and Kingdom Hearts games whenever they come out

Don't Stave is a PC game but it's coming out on the PS4, I dunno when. If you're into survival/RPG games with a artistic look it might be for you. It's probably more fun if you get it on the PC, though. It already has good mods and an active modding community plus a steam workshop is coming very soon.

I really hate the art in Catherine. I think it's those bulging eyes of the characters that terrifies me to no end.

Just thought I would point out that Persona 4: Golden is a vita game. It's highly recommended, but only if KagamineLen actually has vita, which doesn't strike me as the case, though I could be wrong. If you meant Persona 4: Arena, then yes, I would recommend it, but only if he has played at least Persona 4(either version), if not 3. Speaking of which, Persona 3: FES actually is available as a ps2 classic, and is currently on sale for $5, and I would definitely recommend that, in addition to some ps1 jrpgs. Oh, and Odin Sphere. I like that game too, and it is also on sale for $5.

For ps3 exclusive jrpgs that haven't already been mentioned, I would recommend the Atelier games. The Arland Trilogy may not be easy to find at this point(I don't know), and I would recommend collecting them all(or download the vita versions of Totori and Mereru if you have a vita, since they have extra content). I would recommend at least checking out Atelier Ayesha though. Valkyria Chronicles and Ni no Kuni are highly recommended by me too. For games that are not jrpgs, but should appeal to a jrpg gamer, I second Catherine, and I also recommend trying a highly underrated game from Japan Studio called Folklore.

Thanks for all the heads-up. I will pick up "Ni No Kuni," "Demon's Souls" and "Tales of Grace" before I get my hands on my PS3 in September. I'll have a little library before I hook up my new console.

I must be selling my soul to Sony. I also preordered a PS4 that I'll get in January.
