I'm starting to wonder if I'm one of only a few Aspies who is a teetotaler, as in a non-drinker of alcoholic beverages? I know this has been sort of covered in other topics, but not directly. Heck, I've never been buzzed, no less drunk. m

Do any of you drink?

I just bought a 6 pack of beer and i would be shocked if i finish them by christmas. I just don't get the thrill of alcohol especially given the high costs. Im definitely in the minority where i live.

I hated the taste of alcohol. I forced myself to drink beer when I became a rebel, because I couldn't be a punk and not drink and smoke (another thing I detested but forced myself to do, as disgusting as it was). After that I became desensitized to those things. If I go without for a long time, I become as disgusted by it as before. Except for sweet wines, drinks and wine coolers--I do like those. I cannot drink things that taste like real booze, even dry wines. I hate beer just as I had before, but now I can choose to drink sometbing else that I would buy myself and not rely on whatever is on hand. I like sweet drinks. Sugar is my friend :-)

I see no point in spending perfectly good money on booze.

Not that I haven't, but going to a bar has no attraction to me, nor does using booze as a "refreshment."

The most I've enjoyed is a moonshine someone brought to a gathering called "apple pie." It was very tasty and hardly tasted like most hard liquors.

I used to drink a lot, now I drink very occasionally and my daughter who is 21 is a non-drinker.

<--- Drinks like a fish.

<--- Hard liquor in his system and he's a sucker for the sound of breaking glass.

<--- The sound of breaking glass can get him a few days in jail.

<--- Stays to beer these days.

<--- In the past the liquor led to illicit substances which he hasn't done in a while.

I like the taste of beer quite a bit, but the allure of being drunk wore off a few years ago for me.

No, I don't think so. It just depends on what kind of person you are. Obviously anxiety comes with AS, and can make the individual feel afraid to drink alcohol if the anxiety affects you in that way, along with other things that could be related to drinking alcohol, like socialising (most people like to drink alcohol when socialising). I'm afraid to drink alcohol because I'm scared of losing my self-awareness/self-control and I might embarrass myself in the street in front of lots of youngsters and then I will wake up the next morning hung over (and I have emetophobia which is fear of vomiting), but also being the laughing stock of the town (and I have social phobia, which is fear of humiliation).

I think I was put off when I heard about a girl with social issues who I used to be friends with. She had Fragile-X Syndrome, but was also socially awkward and didn't have many friends, so she started going out with her sister and all her sister's friends when she got to about 18. Then I heard on Facebook that this girl had got drunk for the first time and was so drunk that she didn't know what she was doing, and ended up dancing about in one spot with her skirt and knickers around her ankles, showing her private area off to the men, and then some perverted men came along and took her away and had sex with her, and nobody else stopped it because they were drunk themselves (but didn't seem to be doing anything embarrassing like that).

That is one reason why I would NEVER want to get drunk. That is just not me.

I drink socially and sometimes with dinner. I really like the taste of wine. I've never been drunk, as I drink very little at a time.

No longer drinking due to my depression. When i did drink, it actually made me even more inhibited.

I used to drink quite a bit when I was in my early 20's. I still enjoy a good beer but I rarely drink anymore. Probably only a few times a year now.

is it only hf autists are wanting to gather answers from or is anyone welcome?
a old favourite of mine is tropical orange bacardi breezer, was age about sixteen when they first came out, sister [aspie] had bought one, took a swig spat it out and shoved in hands saying to drink it and drink did so.
turned out she hated the chemicaly sort of taste to it but had personaly prefered it,it tastes awful if its not proper chilled like from a pub though.
didnt know it was alcohol at first-was clueless towards alcohol brands like bacardi; mum only bought cheapo brands that smelled like paint stripper from the local off licence and carlsberg special brew; known in manchester as tramp juice.
had two small bottles of it a week; [they are one and a half units of alcohol per bottle] and refused to give them up when the most abusive support staff of mine demanded they be given up; she kept saying am alcoholic from then on...silly btch had never understood an autistic routine in her life.

have never been drunk before, its weird but am not able to detect any difference in cognitive and mental ability from drinking several units of alcohol [even when have not drunk any for a long time] but have always gotten acute gluten and celiac side effects off it-very visible to other people.
unfortunately due to level of medication am on had to give them up,it was ridiculously hard given the autistic attachment to the routine [aka alcoholism and pyschological dependance in some pillocks views :P ].

sister refuses to drink alcohol because of our mums alcoholism, she believes she will lose control and become addicted if she starts by taking just one drink, she only ever bought the one bottle of bacardi breezer because her mates were pressuring her into getting pissed.

I used to drink a bit as a teenager, but since the 2nd year of university I have gradually lost interest in drinking alcohol. I rarely have a drink these days.

Diagnosed under the DSM5 rules with autism spectrum disorder, under DSM4 psychologist said would have been AS (299.80) but I suspect that I am somewhere between 299.80 and 299.00 (Autism) under DSM4.

I don't drink at all because I don't like the taste and don't like the effect alcohol has on me. I need to have as much control as possible over my mind and body.
