AFAIC, hops make beer taste like dirt- bitter. I don't understand how so many folks find bitter flavors to be delicious. that is like saying dirt is delicious.
I completely agree. People have told me that it is an acquired taste and it takes time to like it. I don't understand why anyone would go through that kind of effort. That baffles me. Hops are fantastic to help you sleep though. Put some dried hops in a sachet in your pillowcase and you will be fast asleep in no time. In fact people who work in some breweries have a hard time staying awake.
Beer is most definitely an acquired taste. Just like a lot of other bitter things such as teas, coffee, dark chocolate, etc...after a while there isn't as much of a sharp bitter bite and there's a dance of subtle nuances of flavors on the tongue. In hoppy bears such as pale ales, I'll often taste notes of pineapple, orange, banana, spicey pepper, apple, etc depending on the type of hops and brew. When I was younger I'd often think, ya right, bull sh*t it taste like those things
, but once I acquired a taste I started to notice a lot of subtle flavors in good quality brews. The same essential oils/terpenes found in hops are found in other fruits/herbs/flowers, which contribute flavor & aroma.
In regards to the original post....I drank a little bit in my late teen years, got buzzed my first time when I was 18. For a few years I'd drink occasionally with friends and get rather drunk every so often, I was kinda doing it just because it seemed like the thing to do. As I became older I realized how lame and boring of a drug alcohol is. I thoroughly enjoy the taste of good beer, I really do, but I don't like the effects of alcohol all that much, just makes me sleepy and numb. Maybe once or twice a month I'll have a beer or two with dinner or when hanging with a friend.
As far as using something to loosen up when I find my self in a social setting, I much prefer cannabis and/or kratom.
