In the town of Barrow, far north of Alaska, they seem to have no sunshine / daylight for 65 days a year. I suspect it will not be much different on Nova Zembla. Since Barrow is a place, it seems logical that people also live there, it also seems logical that it is very cold there. On the part of the earth where i stay, there is light every day that warms things up every day. Extra vitamin D does not seem an unnecessary luxury to Barrow and Nova Zembla. Or it must be that there are people living from generation to generation who have a body that is adapted to the darkness and cold conditions. The first days when there is sun again will be short times. Probably reversed again in the summer. In that period when there is no sun you can still speak of 'days' :?:
Watches and alarm clocks will continue to work, but the sense of time of people and all other animals will be transformed without the sun i think.

^^ Thanks for sharing that! Yes, they experience what’s called a “Polar Night” for 2 months each year ... It gets down to -27C/well below 0 farenheit and beyond there. It has reached -50. Extremely difficult to live there, if you’re not from there. The natives are very much adapted. You’ll have a much higher chance of depression, substance abuse and suicide if you choose to move there. Exhorbitant costs of food(due to all food having to be flown in), offset by high median income. Because of the constant darkness in the winter, it can be hard to tell the days apart. Some people call the police station to ask what day or time it is. No trees, mountains or hills ... I prefer Iceland! :)

Moon Over Bourbon Street

The song was inspired by the book Interview with a Vampire written by Anne Rice.

Yep....Barrow has only twilight (at most) from mid November till about now. It's on the coast----so the Arctic temperatures are moderated a little bit, especially when the coast is ice-free. What makes it brutally cold is the wind. Minus 30 Celsius with a 30 mph wind is nothing to sneeze at! Though I have seen it near Zero Celsius with no wind during January. It seems to be between Minus 25 to Minus 30 Celsius most of the time in the middle of winter, though.

I've been monitoring the Sea Ice Webcam for years. The coast is iced from about November-early December till sometime in June. In earlier years, it took until July before the coast became ice-free (global warming!).

In the summer, it's usually above freezing----but it rarely gets to be over 15 Celsius. There are more and more temperatures in the low teens Celsius these days during the summer, though the average maximum is in the upper single digits Celsius.

The Coming of Night
by Emily Dickinson

How the old mountains drip with sunset,
And the brake of dun!
How the hemlocks are tipped in tinsel
By the wizard sun!

How the old steeples hand the scarlet,
Till the ball is full, —
Have I the lip of the flamingo
That I dare to tell?

Then, how the fire ebbs like billows,
Touching all the grass
With a departing, sapphire feature,
As if a duchess pass!

How a small dusk crawls on the village
Till the houses blot;
And the odd flambeaux no men carry
Glimmer on the spot!

Now it is night in nest and kennel,
And where was the wood,
Just a dome of abyss is nodding
Into solitude! —

These are the visions baffled Guido;
Titian never told;
Domenichino dropped the pencil,
Powerless to unfold.

Illusions (in a solitair way) are most of the time better for my mind than reality.

The 7th of April last year.

Years ago I was somewhere on a large sandy plain. The view, the sound ( the sound of silence ), being alone, all these things gave me a nice feeling of being on the moon. It is a pity that the feeling of weightlessness was not present, luckily oxygen was present this moon. Imagination is often more beautiful than reality.

Thanks for sharing ... awesome!

February 2 years ago, I was blown away by the alien landscape of Iceland ... both exciting and dangerous, as the weather can change in an instant ...

For Time and Moon

Mesmerised. like fireflies on this, the brightest night
As burning embers flicker, exhalt the twilight’s dawn.
Were it not for strumming, and candles burning bright,
They might forget whyfore they came, danced into the morn.

All senses set to elevate, each minute set to savour,
The promise of a new dawn, a full Moon lights the Sea.
Craving new Beginnings, no ties … yet bound secure,
They found a truer meaning and a better place to be.

Friends were lost this past year, descent to higher ground
We keep them close, until we meet again when our time’s nigh.
We celebrate the promise, a world emerging new
The Battle will be fought and won, as sure as Doves do cry.

As shadows cast their patterns on the sand, trees gently sway.
Twisted branches spiraling through to reach the midnight Sun.
The dews replenish weary ground, plumeiria’s scent emerging
Full Moon, playful, envelopes the scene that’s being spun.

As we Dive in waters new, we cast aside the past
All tragedy and turmoil, we only take the good
For Time and Moon know better than to waste a brighter day
Every breath is sacred, let this be understood.

Thanks for the beautifull photo's and poem Juliette :!:

Unfortunely, i have sad news about DJ Sophie.
While admiring the full moon, this woman fell, very tragic. :(

“True to her spirituality she had climbed up to watch the full moon and accidentally slipped and fell. She will always be here with us.”

^^ I too heard the sad news this afternoon of Sophie’s sudden fall and loss, while trying to gain the best vantage point for the Moon! Just 34years old! Life is precious. May she RIP. Thanks so much for sharing, Erewhon.

The Snow Moon

The moon is almost full again. The full moon in February is called 'snow moon' by some, something that does have some logic. When the new moon was 14 days ago, the piece of earth here was completely covered with snow. I was sorry that the snow was so little in contact with the moonlight. It seems like a wonderful sight to see that moonlight on a snowy earth. Unfortunately, it was not allowed to be. With a snowy earth, the shadows would also have become more pronounced. With the coming full moon, the snow has disappeared, and another thing is that the moon is very high, which will also reduce the shadow. The moon rises so high that it cannot shine in my bedroom. And it is still too cold to put my mattress outside.
