I came across the song Daft Punk called "Within" just now, and realized a deep resonance with the lyrics, in that I felt they describe my experience of the Asperger's inner world too precisely. (Although reading them directly it feels like the atmosphere of the music itself contributes a large part to this impression).

----
There are so many things that I don't understand
There's a world within me that I cannot explain
Many rooms to explore, but the doors look the same
I am lost, I can't even remember my name

I've been, for sometime, looking for someone
I need to know now
Please tell me who I am
----

I wonder if anyone felt the same inner movement from these words.

And in extension, I would like to invite anyone who has any song lyrics/prose/poetry etc. they feel strike deep into the Asperger's world experience to please share. Even with words as a conceptual shadow, perhaps many of us resonate on the same frequency.

Listen to the lyrics of the songs of New Wave music pioneer Gary Numan. They relate very well to my Asperger's.

I always use music as a means to enhance the characters in a novel I am writing - one of them is Autistic and I have a whole long list of songs for him.

But I think when you have Aspergers, or at least problems that you associate with Aspergers, then when you hear music you can easily relate it to that. Probably some people who have other things they are dealing with like divorce or whatever, might find the same songs relate to their problems also.

I often associate with lyrics in songs. Not always about aspergers, sometimes about my sexuality or about how someone makes me feel. Sometimes when I struggle to find my own words I can use song lyrics to describe how I feel. Some people find this creepy though :-(

Part of Rush's Subdivision has spoken to me since I first saw it in someone else's signature elsewhere:

Quote:
Growing up it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass production zone

Nowhere is the dreamer
Or the misfit so alone

I listened to that song too! :D And it also relates to how I feel a lot every day of my life.

I relate a lot to many songs of Amanda Palmer and The Dresden Dolls.
I did long before I got diagnosed, but now I relate to them even more.

Like this part from "Girl Anachronism" that really puts words to how I sometimes relate to the rest of the world:

"There I go again
Pretending to be you
Make believing
That I have a soul beneath the surface
Trying to convince you
It was accidentally on purpose

I am not so serious
This passion is a plagiarism
I might join your century
But only on a rare occasion"

Or this one, from "Sex Changes" That makes me relate to getting a diagnosis.

"Starting from the time you get this letter
Your life will be one never-ending
"hope you're feeling better"
You get your choice of an aesthetic
We'll need to chop your clock off
It might not be what you expected
There is no money back once you've been ripped off

Today's a very special day
The boys will murder for it but what will the neighbors say
It leaves you feeling pretty hollow
It might be nice to look at but
Don't forget you're stuck with it tomorrow and tomorrow, and tomorrow..."

And two more:

"Down at work I'm getting too familiar with the floor
Trading in my talents by the mouthful

Hate to break it to you but it's out of my control
Forces go to work while we are sleeping
If I could attack with a more sensible approach
Obviously that's what I'd be doing"

"Blake makes friend but only for a minute
He prefers the things he orders from the Internet
And Blake's been having trouble with his head again
He takes pills but never takes his medicine
He tells me that he's fine and the sad thing is, he's right"

When I was young I could relate to parts of Soul Asylum's Runaway Train

I go home and I lock my door
I can hear the sirens
I see buildings and bars from the window

And I'm happy to be on my own
Hard like a rock, cold like stone
White like a diamond, black like coal
Cut like a jewel, yeah I repair
Myself when you're not there
Solitaire
Something you consider rare
I don't wanna be compared
With that cheap shimmer and glitter
Solitaire
I'm in love with the ice-blue, gray skies of England
I'll admit, all I wanna do is get drunk and silent
Watch my life unfold all around me
Like a beautiful garden
I see flowers so tall, they surround me
Oh my heart, it became so hardened
Hard like a rock, cold like stone
White like a diamond, black like coal
Cut like a jewel, yeah I repair
Myself when you're not there
Solitaire
Something you consider rare
I don't wanna be compared
With that cheap shimmer and glitter

And all the other jewels around me
They astounded me at first
I covered up my heart in boundaries
And all the fakes, they called me cursed
But I'm not cursed, I'm not cursed
I was just covered in dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt
Solitaire
Something you consider rare
I don't wanna be compared
With that cheap shimmer and glitter

outside the world's so dangerous
It's hard to find someone to trust
Fills me with reservation drives me into hibernation
I watch what's going on
But I don't want to belong
Leave me in my introspection
Safely behind protection

Just watching my window world go by
Without my window who am I
Without my window who am I

"Stephanie Says" by The Velvet Underground

Stephanie says
That she wants to know
Why she's given half her life
To people she hates now

Stephanie says
When answering the phone
What country shall I say
Is calling from across the world

But she's not afraid to die,
The people all call her Alaska
Between worlds so the people ask her
Cause it's all in her mind
It's all in her mind

Stephanie says
That she wants to know
Why it is though she's the door
She can't be the room

Stephanie says
But doesn't hang up the phone
What sea shell she is calling
From across the world

But she's not afraid to die,
The people all call her Alaska
Between worlds so the people ask her
Cause it's all in her mind
It's all in her mind

They're asking
Is it good or bad
It's such an icy feeling
It's so cold in Alaska,
It's so cold in Alaska,
It's so cold in Alaska

Let It Go. Especially when I need to remind myself to take a break from masking.

"Let It Go"
(from "Frozen" soundtrack)

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation
And it looks like I'm the queen

The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn't keep it in, heaven knows I tried!

Don't let them in, don't let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know
Well, now they know!

Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door!

I don't care
What they're going to say
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway!

It's funny how some distance
Makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me
Can't get to me at all!

It's time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me I'm free!

Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You'll never see me cry!

Here I stand
And here I'll stay
Let the storm rage on!

My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I'm never going back
The past is in the past!

Let it go, let it go
And I'll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone!

Here I stand
In the light of day
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway!
