Haven't played too many unfortunately. I'd grown up with the SNES, so the only NES game I'd played for a long time without realizing it was Super Mario Bros., and that was the port to the Gameboy Color. After that I had the special Zelda Collector's Disc that came bundled with the Gamecube, which included the original Legend of Zelda as well as Adventure of Link. Finally the Wii came out but even then I'm sure the library for NES titles even now is limited, and I didn't have the money for everything I wanted to get off of it. So I guess that this would be my short list of NES titles I've played, from most to least favorite:
Kirby's Adventure
Legend of Zelda
Zelda 2: Adventure of Link
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Donkey Kong
Final Fantasy
Metroid
Might be a few others I'm forgetting but those seem to be the most memorable.
Kirby's Adventure was pretty great. Better than I expected it to be. Not quite sure why I feel it's so good but I guess it must just be the general feel of it to me. And even though it was designed specifically for new players, it still feels harder to me than some of the latter Kirby games.
The first two Zelda games were extremely hard for me back when I got them as a kid, so I put them down for a while and focused on Majora's Mask(which I was never able to get on the N64). But I did go back eventually. I beat LoZ a number of times, and even went through one time in one sitting, and only died once due to being stuck in level-9 and having the save button not working. As for AoL, though, I pretty much gave up before on the path to the last palace. It's unfortunate that I no longer have it or can afford it on the Virtual Console, though I'm not sure if I would want to do it all over again either. It was fun but also incredibly frustrating at a lot of parts. I remember grinding to max level before the first palace and it took me forever.
The Mario games are fun but I just plain suck at old 2D platformers. They just aren't my types of games. One of the few I can beat is Donkey Kong, though the first time I played it, was back when my brother and I were going through Donkey Kong 64 and you have to play this arcade game twice. Not sure if it was just the super awkward N64 controller or just the fact we were kids and we sucked at it. I guess it's notable that version might be the actual arcade version, as it has some major differences and a whole extra level to go through compared to the downloadable one on the Wii.
I've liked most of the old Final Fantasy games, but I just can not get into the first one. It's far too simplistic to me and thus feels very random. The lack of much story involvement is also a negative to me. I guess if I looked up more stuff about stats though I could possibly get more into it.
I don't understand the love for the first Metroid at all. Compared to most of the rest of the games which I love, the first Metroid is just a glitchy, buggy mess with a ton of rooms that look EXACTLY THE SAME that I'm sure were designed that way to get players lost, which is a pretty cheap way of doing it. It hasn't aged well at all.
