What is bad acting? Is this good acting to you?

One thing I learned from TV show "fan" boards is that bad acting goes unnoticed by me. I've watched shows and then read about how someone's acting is so terrible. :? One show I watch, Scandal, has an actress that everyone raves about. I've even begun closely watching scenes with this actress, but nothing sticks out to me. I'm not sure if it's possible to critique acting based on an isolated scene, but I'll try anyway. So does the lady's acting look like "good acting" to you, and why? And can you usually tell bad acting from good? Warning: there is adult and sexual language in the clip. She is the First Lady talking to the U.S. president.

This is easily and by far my favorite current TV show. The plot and sub-plots, the characters and the acting are superb. Scandal....got to love it! I think all the actors and actresses on this show are decent to great....Mellie included. IMHO the reason that most people dislike her is because she plays such a manipulative woman. I don't see that she is subpar in her acting skills...but then again, perhaps she appears that way in the presence of such other strong people on the show?

I find that some horror movies have bad acting. Melodrama is bad acting too (e.g. soapies). Basically any acting that seems too over-the-top (exaggerated behaviours).

No I said people say her acting is great--not bad.

Yeah I heard about that. I didn't watch the special though. I may see if some of it is online and see if it looks bad to me.

EDIT: Ok, I watched a few clips. I can kind of see the bad acting in this one around 2:35 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31v13ukJknE. But honestly, if they hadn't made a fuss over it I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

Oh - my bad, I didn't catch that was what people were saying. I think she is a pretty good actress for the most part.

And about Carrie Underwood - I thought her singing was good...but thought her acting was only average. She did have a few nice scenes and chemistry with her leading man though.

I think the actor who plays detective Coulson in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D can't act. He just sounds like he's speaking lines. Basically acting as you would normally speak, not being able to play a diverse number of characters.

If you're still in doubt watch Daniel Radcliffe in the first two Harry Potter films and then compare him to Asa Butterfield in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. He was so good in Ender's Game too.

Edit: I love Scandal too. I think that actress is good. She could have had too much accent that can make it harder to tell if they are a good actress or not. In Doctor Who they have been some actors with such strong accents I couldn't tell they were bad. I can also see how that actress could go over the top, over acting, but she doesn't. He's a good actor too.

I used to watch this show after James Spader's black list. Spader is a very versatile actor too. That's what I love best about actors. He's been in so many different roles and though he has a very familiar accent he is till believable in all his roles. My favourite one was in Secretary.

I just got a thought, to me my native Australians have such rough and dry accents which is quite familiar to me that it doesn't really seem like acting at all- but what does the rest of the world think about them?
