OSes written in assembly Kolibri OS <--link. Screaming fast. Another related project: Menuet OS <--link. They are not GNU/Linux or BSD. Like Damn-Small-Linux, will fit on a floppy. Fun to play with and super fast.

I heard about Kolibri a few years ago, and just now Menuet. --It appears that of the two, Menuet has been developed a bit more.

It will be nice to check back in a few years to see if either have developed into anything useful.

I happen to remember the days when BeOS was still a fully extant OS, and while it was blazingly fast, the thing that really killed it was a lack of development for real world apps. --What litte there was came about much too late.

I'd love to see BeOS come back.
