Advocate.com has made me, a lifetime resident of the Spokane area (I actually live in neighboring Spokane Valley), very proud by naming Spokane, Washington the third most gay friendly city in the country.
Anyone familiar with Spokane knows the stereotype of the city and surrounding area as being the home of right wing bigots and racists, not to mention having a meth epidemic of seeming Biblical proportions. And to be sure, Spokanites feel a sense of inferiority when compared to Seattle, and regularly beat themselves up for being too conservative and provincial. But it's also true that there is also a very real live-and-let-live attitude among residents, and that the Pacific Northwest in general has always not only accepted people's eccentricities (not that gays are eccentric), but even encourages them (David Lynch, after all had grown up in Spokane, as well as in Idaho and Montana). And while a bare majority of Spokane voters had opposed legalizing gay marriage, a huge minority of us had supported it and took part in working for it's passage (I certainly had volunteered my time to the cause). And as my daughter's God father, who had lived and breathed the campaign for gay marriage, had told me that while there was no doubt about passage on the west side of the state, it was the Spokane vote that had put the initiative over the top, and into legalization.
So yes, I proudly toot my horn for my home - - Lord knows it doesn't get much good press.

Congratulations, Kraichgauer! I grew up in southeastern Washington state. About twice a year, we would drive to Spokane. I loved the city and thought I would move there when I became an adult. I ended up in Indiana. Again, Congrats!!

Congratulations, Bill aka Kraichgauer! I'd love to visit Spokane should I ever have the opportunity, but being thousands of km away in South Africa, this is unlikely unless I should win the lottery...

There are for sure plenty of places I'd love to visit, but I doubt I'd ever be able to. But thank you for the sentiment, anyhow!

Thanks! :D
And for what it's worth, the Spokane LGBT Center, where my friend (who is also my daughter's God father) volunteers at, has moved just down the street from where we live, here in Spokane Valley. Adds a bit of color, I think, to the neighborhood.
