When I try to sit still, I feel like there are hundreds of ants crawling all over my body. So I don't really stop moving during the day. I also suffer from persistent tics.

Does anyone else get this?

Could be many different things. You should consult both your doctor and psychologist.

Parasitosis- A mental condition. Wikipedia is too strong on its definition as a delusion or psychosis though so don't be scared by it.

Niacin sensitivity- Niacin is found in foods you commonly eat and when you get too much of it or if you're hyper sensitive to it, it will cause in your body either a flushing sensation (you turn red all over and it itches as if you had a sunburn everywhere you have skin) or it causes a sensation like something was crawling inside your skin... kind of like when your just starts to fall asleep and you feel that tingling sensation...except that sensation is much slower, lighter and feels on top of your skin.

I've felt both effects from the niacin supplements I take to help reduce cholesterol (niacin is amazing for that!). The sunburn sensation is not pleasant... imagine a bad sunburn inside your buttcheeks and under your nails aside from it being all over your body plus you turning red all over like a cooked shrimp. >< . The tingling sensation did feel as if I had insects scurrying all over me.

Hyper sensitivity in your hair follicles- When your body hair moves (slight breeze, brushes with clothing, etc) its felt ten times more than normal so you don't feel 'ooh its my body hair' but rather 'something is ON my skin!'. There are many things that can cause this so your doctor would be better informed on what it could be.

I knew somebody who had that "bugs crawling" sensation as a reaction to a medication. Even if the med is not new, best to touch base with doctor.

I am actually allergic to niacin, interestingly enough.

I'm seeing my psychiatrist tomorrow so I will ask her.

I had that happen before, but I hadn't slept in a really long time. It's a miserable sensation.I knew there was nothing there, but it sure felt like it.I was also really depressed at the time and had other weird physical sensations during depression.

Oh that's very interesting! Thank you for sharing :D

I get this feeling sometimes and it's awful. Mostly it happens when I'm trying to sleep. It feels like little bugs are running all over my skin. I end up rolling around scratching and rubbing the spots until there are so many spots I end up jumping up and taking a shower. And then sometimes I get extremely paranoid about having invisible tiny bugs and wash everything I own just in case. Sometime is start to wonder if I can feel dust mites or something.

I'm not crazy it's just a very convincing feeling, the movement patterns seem erratic and spontaneous. I've been wondering for a while what could be causing it. I do have tactile sensitivity issues so I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was related to some kind of hypersensitivity.

I get that feeling while sitting still all the time. I need something to distract me like the Internet - WP in particular.

Wow, that's a really rare allergy. It could very well be this.

You're welcome. Hope it helps :)

If you have tactile sensitivity then it could be that. Even when you're sitting still there's still drafts of air that can make your body hair follicles 'detect' movement... your breathing makes your body sway and move in minute amounts but thats really all it can take for your body hair to move slightly and you feel that. Since body hair is..well, all over your body and there's tens of thousands of them, you can end up feeling the crawling sensation all over.

I can't sleep without having a fan on... I like to feel the air circulating. But that makes the air also move the hair in my hands, feet which give me that annoying crawly sensation. It doesn't bother me in the day but at night.. ugh >< . I sleep with a long sleeve shirt and long pants pajama...that solves it for me.

I'll tell my psychiatrist as I'm just about to see her. I think the tactile sensitivity bit makes sense.

I hate this feeling! Just got it from the fan hitting my neck.

Also, hair regrowth.

I tend to get itchy tingly skin after I do the dishes.

Also, hyperactive people can feel uncomfortable if they don't move around but it's usually felt as agitation.

If I actually get ants crawling on my body, sometimes I still feel the sensation repeating for hours later, sometimes days later. Maybe it's a repeating sensation from something actually crawling on you?

My psychiatrist said it may be tardive akathisia. I hadn't thought of that. She decreased the dose of my Amisulpride (one of the two antipsychotics I take). Anyway my psychotic symptoms are lesser nowadays.
