Here some different family member opinions on my late grandfather (on my dads side)

My dad (his eldest son)
His diabetes made him bad tempered
Reserved
Terrible temper
Charming
Used to hit me and my brother with a broom
Very smooth with people
Had a short fuse

My uncle (my grandfathers youngest and favourite son)
Very gentlle man
Never raised a hand to him or his brothers
Was not interested in small talk

My uncle (my grandfathers second oldest son)
Violent man
Agressive man
A bully

My aunt (my uncle wife)
He beat children

My mum
He was very sweet
Charming
Quiet man
Used to be in his own world a lot
Regular army guy
Old school type of man

My grandmother (mothers side)
Charming
Never made a sound
A lovely man

My grandad (mothers side)
He was a gentleman

Friend of the family
He was just like an ordinary man

Talk about conflicting opinions LOL. Sadly he died when I was a baby but what do these differing opinions tell you about my grandfather as a person?

Your late grandpa showed a different side to each of his family members.

this actually shows two things

the man quite possibly showed different things to different people being prejudicial in how he treated some

also some people just color how they speak of other, especially those who are dead, some will exaggerate past wrongs, others think "never speak ill of the dead"
