Nick Drake is one of my favorites and this is my favorite song if his, "Place to Be"

"When I was younger, younger than before
I never saw the truth hanging from the door
And now I'm older see it face to face
And now I'm older gotta get up clean the place.

And I was green, greener than the hill
Where the flowers grew and the sun shone still
Now I'm darker than the deepest sea
Just hand me down, give me a place to be.

And I was strong, strong in the sun
I thought I'd see when day is done
Now I'm weaker than the palest blue
Oh, so weak in this need for you."

Now that I smile,
Now that I'm laughing even deeper inside.
Now that I see,
Now that I finally found the one thing I denied
It's now I know do I stay or do I go
And it is finally I decide
That I'll be leaving
In the fairest of the seasons.

Well that's a coincidence...because keeping with the Jackson Browne spirit from "These Days":

"I'll keep on moving
Things are bound to be improving these days
These days-
These days I sit on corner stones
And count the time in quarter tones to ten.
Don't confront me with my failures
I had not forgotten them"

And here's a little gem from Simon and Garfunkel's "Dangling Conversation":

"It's a still life water color,
Of a now late afternoon,
As the sun shines through the curtained lace
And shadows wash the room.
And we sit and drink our coffee
Couched in our indifference,
Like shells upon the shore
You can hear the ocean roar
In the dangling conversation
And the superficial sighs,
The borders of our lives."

The profound words of JoJo's songwriters, circa 2004:
:P
I get shopping sprees off the heezy
I get dough to blow, please believe me
Don't want that one-on-one, take it easy
You're just a jump off, I'm his breezy
I'm the one who knows him the best
I'm his one and only, nothing less
You don't wanna take it there, don't you see
He told me he loves me, called me his breezy

Let me break it down, break it down
I got it on lock and
I think you better stop
I heard you been checking for my boo
Do your thing, get busy, give it your best shot
But you couldn't get a callback
And even after all that
Caught you at the mall for a throwback
That's big trippin' but you wouldn't listen
He's mine, not yours, better fall back

Now I'mma let you know to your face
You need to hit the brakes
'Cause you're about to make a major mistake
I'm gonna call you out, no doubt
Let me spell it out
Baby, you ain't nothing but a phase
'Cause I know what you want, and
You don't have to front
So go ahead and pull another stunt
Remember that it's me that he loves, always thinking of
I'm the only one that he wants

'Cause what we have is so real
It's more than just dollar bills
This living lavish wouldn't matter
If I didn't have his heart
Sorry, shorty, he's mine
Better luck next time
This fashion, you can have it
But I'll still be his girl

From a Late Night Train - The Blue Nile

From a late night train
Reflected in the water
When all the rainy pavements
Lead to you
It's over now
I know it's over
But I can't let go.

The cigarettes, the magazines
All stacked up in the rain
There doesn't seem to be a funny side
It's over now
I know it's over
But I can't let go

From a late night train
The little towns go rolling by
And people in the station
Going home
It's over now
I know it's over
But I love you so

I love this song. I just think the line all the rainy pavements lead to you is so filled with sorrow, and I like the line about the cigarettes and magazines stacked up in the rain, there doesn't seem to be a funny side, like he's just looking at stuff, shell shocked, heart broken, just staring at the things that go by from his seat on the train.

Del Amitri - Before the Evening Steals the Afternoon

Lovers they walk on the bright side of the street
And the city it shines in surprise in the ice cream heat
And I want to be kissed in the haze of this hotel room
Before the evening steals the afternoon

And the traffic it shakes as my travel shaver drones
And the maid she mistakes my 'come in' for a 'please leave me alone'
But I want to be held in the swell of her sweet perfume
Before the evening steals the afternoon

Before the daylight dies and the dusty sky gets rusted up with tungsten
Before the phony night stakes its claim on walkers waiting at the junction

From the blue shade of the park, couples emerge
Dropping hands like they're still scared to get caught
But I want to be caught in their rage of embraces too
Before the evening steals the afternoon

I just love the picture this paints. It's just such a perfect little scene. I love the line about the dusty sky rusted up with tungsten.

Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child’s balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying

Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn
Suicide remarks are torn
From the fool’s gold mouthpiece the hollow horn
Plays wasted words, proves to warn
That he not busy being born is busy dying

Temptation’s page flies out the door
You follow, find yourself at war
Watch waterfalls of pity roar
You feel to moan but unlike before
You discover that you’d just be one more
Person crying

So don’t fear if you hear
A foreign sound to your ear
It’s alright, Ma, I’m only sighing

As some warn victory, some downfall
Private reasons great or small
Can be seen in the eyes of those that call
To make all that should be killed to crawl
While others say don’t hate nothing at all
Except hatred

Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Make everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It’s easy to see without looking too far
That not much is really sacred

While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the president of the United States
Sometimes must have to stand naked

An’ though the rules of the road have been lodged
It’s only people’s games that you got to dodge
And it’s alright, Ma, I can make it

Advertising signs they con
You into thinking you’re the one
That can do what’s never been done
That can win what’s never been won
Meantime life outside goes on
All around you

You lose yourself, you reappear
You suddenly find you got nothing to fear
Alone you stand with nobody near
When a trembling distant voice, unclear
Startles your sleeping ears to hear
That somebody thinks they really found you

A question in your nerves is lit
Yet you know there is no answer fit
To satisfy, insure you not to quit
To keep it in your mind and not forget
That it is not he or she or them or it
That you belong to

Although the masters make the rules
For the wise men and the fools
I got nothing, Ma, to live up to

For them that must obey authority
That they do not respect in any degree
Who despise their jobs, their destinies
Speak jealously of them that are free
Cultivate their flowers to be
Nothing more than something they invest in

While some on principles baptized
To strict party platform ties
Social clubs in drag disguise
Outsiders they can freely criticize
Tell nothing except who to idolize
And then say God bless him

While one who sings with his tongue on fire
Gargles in the rat race choir
Bent out of shape from society’s pliers
Cares not to come up any higher
But rather get you down in the hole
That he’s in

But I mean no harm nor put fault
On anyone that lives in a vault
But it’s alright, Ma, if I can’t please him

Old lady judges watch people in pairs
Limited in sex, they dare
To push fake morals, insult and stare
While money doesn’t talk, it swears
Obscenity, who really cares
Propaganda, all is phony

While them that defend what they cannot see
With a killer’s pride, security
It blows the minds most bitterly
For them that think death’s honesty
Won’t fall upon them naturally
Life sometimes must get lonely

My eyes collide head-on with stuffed
Graveyards, false gods, I scuff
At pettiness which plays so rough
Walk upside-down inside handcuffs
Kick my legs to crash it off
Say okay, I have had enough, what else can you show me?

And if my thought-dreams could be seen
They’d probably put my head in a guillotine
But it’s alright, Ma, it’s life, and life only

I've given up
I'm sick of feeling
Is there nothing you can say?

Take this all away
I'm suffocating!
Tell me what the f**k is
Wrong with me?

Put me out of my misery
Put me out of my misery
Put me out of my
Put me out of my f*****g misery!

"Amazing Journey"

Deaf, dumb and blind boy
He's in a quiet vibration land
Strange as it seems
His musical dreams
Ain't quite so bad

Ten years old
With thoughts as bold
As thought can be
Loving life and becoming wise
In simplicity

Sickness can surely take the mind
Where minds can't usually go
Come on the amazing journey
And learn all you should know

A vague haze of delirium
Creeps up on me
All at once a tall stranger
I suddenly see
He's dressed in a silver-sparked
Glittering gown
And his golden beard flows
Nearly down to the ground

Nothing to say, and nothing to hear
And nothing to see
Each sensation makes a note
In my symphony

Sickness can surely take the mind
Where minds can't usually go
Come on the amazing journey
And learn all you should know

His eyes are the eyes
That transmit all they know
Sparkle warm crystalline glances to show
That he is your leader
And he is your guide
On the amazing journey together you'll ride

I posted a bunch of these on another forum, I'll try to dig it back up. I remember posting a bunch of Tool, System of a Down, Tarby, and In Flames songs, as well as Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Mad World, and Super Sonic.

A lot from the dubbed sub-genre of 'Post-Punk'. Personal and political. Self aware, and social commentary.

I'll pick 4:

Giant - The The

The sun is high and I'm surrounded by sand
For as far as my eyes can see
I'm strapped into a rocking chair
With a blanket all over my knees

I, I am a stranger to myself
And nobody knows I'm here
When I looked into my face it wasn't myself I'd seen
But who I've tried to be

I'm thinking of things I'd hoped to forget
I'm choking to death in a sun that never sets
I clogged up my mind with perpetual greed
And turned all of my friends into enemies
And now the past has returned to haunt me

I'm scared of God and scared of hell
And I'm caving in upon myself
I'm scared of God and scared of hell
And I'm caving in upon myself

How can anyone know me when I don't even know myself?
How can anyone know me when I don't even know myself?
How can anyone know me when I don't even know myself?

Irish Blood, English Heart - Morrissey

Irish blood, English heart, this I'm made of
There is no one on earth I'm afraid of
And no regime can buy or sell me

I've been dreaming of a time when
To be English is not to be baneful
To be standing by the flag not feeling shameful
Racist or partial

Irish blood, English heart, this I'm made of
There is no one on earth I'm afraid of
And I will die with both of my hands untied

I've been dreaming of a time when
The English are sick to death of labor and Tories
And spit upon the name Oliver Cromwell
And denounce this royal line
That still salute him and will salute him forever

Paralysed - Gang Of Four

Blinkered, paralysed
Flat on my back

They say our world is built on endeavor
That every man is for himself
Wealth is for the one that wants it
Paradise, if you can earn it

History is the reason
I'm washed up

Blinkered, paralysed
Flat on my back

My ambitions come to nothing
What I wanted now just seems a waste of time
I can't make out what has gone wrong
I was good at what I did

The crows come home to roost
And I'm the dupe

What We All Want - Gang Of Four

This wheel spins letting me off
It's not the lack of trying
Can't put my finger on it

You can't help being hard up
Can't trust the gods we trusted
Don't think that's any insurance

Could I be happy with something else
I need something to fill my time
Could I be happy with something else
I need someone to fill my time

This wheel spins letting me off
These doubts and nagging worries
Nothing to work towards

This demon on my back
Preaches the razors cut
The hope that does not fade

Could I be happy with something else
I need something to fill my time
Could I be happy with something else
I need something to fill my time

This wheel spins letting me off
It's not the lack of trying
Can't put my finger on it

You can't help being hard up
Can't trust the gods we trusted
Don't think that's any insurance

Could I be happy with something else
I need something to fill my time
Could I be happy with something else
I need someone to fill my time

Could I be happy with something else
I need something to fill my time
Could I be happy with something else
I need someone to fill my time

What we want's not what we get

Perfect - The The

It's a chilly English winter,
And solitude is never easy to maintain,
Except when it rains.
So I hang an empty smile beneath my empty eyes,
And go out for a walk.
The wet morning sun reflects off the paving-stones,
While a little dog barks its head off,
In the distance.

Oh, what a perfect day,
To think about myself
My feet are firmly screwed to the floor.
What is there to fear from such a regular world?

Passing by a cemetery,
I think of all the little hopes and dreams,
That lie lifeless and unfulfilled beneath the soil.
I see an old man fingering his perishing flesh.
He tells himself he was a good man and did good things.
Amused and confused by life's little ironies,
He swallows his bottle of distilled damnation.

Oh, what a perfect day,
To think about myself
My feet are firmly screwed to the floor.
What is there to fear from such a regular world?

People turn around with unseeing eyes.
They're looking for something that doesn't exist.
The world you once knew is being eaten up by rust.
No-one has time for the past, but still, in God they trust.
The future is now, but it's all going wrong.
Bodies queue for nothing, but it's to nothing they belong.
People say their prayers and some work hard.
If you give them all your money, they'll give you their hearts.
This town ain't getting like a ghost town.
It's getting like hell.

Oh, what a perfect day,
To think about myself
My feet are firmly screwed to the floor.
What is there to fear from such a regular world?

I saw this thread, and Nick Drake was the first that popped into my mind.

One of my favorite artists through all times, is Neil Young. This particular song is something he ended his concert in Massey Hall '71 with. This recording is so amazing to me because it seems to me like one of those magic nights were everything went right. Every single song is so heartfelt, he's just sitting there by himself playing and singing. Towards the end people are cheering, clapping, whistling and stomping their feet. It must have been such a wonderful experience both to the audience and him. Then he ends the set with this song ( which I can relate to in some ways. )

Neil Young - I am a Child wrote:
I am a child, I'll last a while.
You can't conceive
of the pleasure in my smile.
You hold my hand,
rough up my hair,
It's lots of fun
to have you there.

God gave to you,
now, you give to me,
I'd like to know
what you learned.
The sky is blue
and so is the sea.
What is the color,
when black is burned?
What is the color?

You are a man, you understand.
You pick me up
and you lay me down again.
You make the rules,
you say what's fair,
It's lots of fun
to have you there.

God gave to you,
now, you give to me,
I'd like to know
what you learned.
The sky is blue
and so is the sea.
What is the color,
when black is burned?
What is the color?

I am a child, I'll last a while.
You can't conceive
of the pleasure in my smile.

I've loved this song for a long time, it's so catchy and has so much to say about life (although I read that he actually wrote it about his broken cell phone). I just found the amazing video today.

Edit - can't imbed it for some reason, but here's the link to the video:

Dan Mangan - Robots

I don't know what you've been told
But I don't get out much these days
Waking young and feeling old
The days are no longer my own
To piss away the waking hours

But don't, don't, don't
Don't let them go
Don't, don't, don't, don't
Don't let them go to waste
The fire in my eye
Is fleeting now
Your robot heart is bleeding

Tried to be the robot king
And settled for a robot boy
Ring the bells that still can ring
And sing your stupid head off to
The ones who are not listening

But don't, don't, don't
Don't let them go
Don't, don't, don't, don't
Don't let them go to waste
The fire in my eye
Is fleeting now
Your robot heart is bleeding out

And I've spent half of my life
In the customer service line
Flaws in the design
A sign of the times

And that little voice
In the back of your mind
Just wants you to know
Just hopes you know

Robots need love too
They want to be loved by you
They want to be loved by you
They want to be loved by

Robots need love too
They want to be loved by you
They want to be loved by you
They want to be loved by

Robots need love too
They want to be loved by you
They want to be loved by you
They want to be loved by

Robots need love too
They want to be loved by you
They want to be loved by you
They want to be loved by you
