I need a way to keep my computer worry free and safe from the baddies in this gigantic net of complexity.

Yet I'd still love to milk this "information supercow" as I am currently doing.

Are there any online resources which will pave my way to tread the murky areas of the net without getting preyed upon by any undesirable creatures?

I tried asking this on a few hacker sites but they all ignored me.

My recommendations:

1. Use Mozilla Firefox for browsing the internet instead of Internet Explorer.

2. Install Microsoft AntiSpyware. Microsoft gets a lot of crap for their security efforts, but MSAS is really an excellent piece of software.

3. Install AVG AntiVirus. It makes Norton and McAfee look like total slackers.

While you're at it, install Mozilla ThunderBird and stop using Outlook Express.

Andd get a big firewall, or use the windows one. And keep your Windows update up to date.

Of course, I never take my own advice.

I agree with 1) and 3) of Ghotistix suggestions, and Jetson's. For a firewall I recommend Zone Alarm - free, effective and operates in stealth mode. Spyware - AdAware and Spybot do a better job than the Micro$oft beta IMHO, you can get those from Download.com.

Love the new redex avatar BladeRoden...

That all depends on how much you really want to learn about computers, build a spare computer, then dig in with both claws bared, the more you have to deal with and fix the more you will learn, getting things that will fix most of your problems for you is helpful YES, esp the anti viri and anti Trojans, but fix the bugs your self, you will learn much.
make book marks of your best fix-it sights, and keep them on disk, along with your best fix-it tools, and the other essentials. the more you fix-it the better you will get.

 Macs Rule!! !! !! !!, but of course it needs to
to be a Powerbook G3-G5 since desktops are
so confining and limiting and those with AS/HFA
since they are smarter than the average person
and should express their independence and
individuality.

Sincerely,
