I think masturbation comes close to being a need as it is essential for health.

Sex with a partner isn't a need.

masturbation for men only! for women it is far from essential for health....

Mental health is health.

there are more important factors for mental health than masturbation/(sex).
air, water, sleep, food, safety, companionship. then maybe we can look further

Cool, let me know when biological imperatives are formally recognized by cannotthinkoff so I know when they become legitimate.

This one (The Maslow hierarchy of needs) appears to be widely used even to this day:

However, the Maslow pyramid has been criticised for assuming that the ranking of needs is the same across cultures.

And as Pobbles said, needs ≠ entitlements.

It would perhaps be more prudent to use "wants" than "needs", as the latter usually has normative connotations.

I reckon the Maslow pyramid is a pretty good basis for discussion, but we would probably all make our own amendments.

It is interesting that Sex appears in level one, whilst Sexual Intimacy appears at level 3.

I think that there is a difference between our animal needs, and our human needs. Our animal needs never change, but our human needs continue to evolve. In animal terms, sex is not a need, it is our purpose! Our need for food and shelter is associated with the survival of our species.

The higher levels of the Maslow pyramid are mostly concerned with needs which are additional to our survival needs. They are concerned mostly with social needs, which can vary between societies. Some other animal species appear to behave according to social rules, but those rules appear to be totally inflexible.

Auties biggest problem is that they cannot deal with the flexibility of human social behaviour.

But I have still not found a good reason for the human rule that whilst eating is a social act, sh*****g needs to be done in private. And why can couples dance in public, snog in public, but get arrested for shagging in public?
