I don't think "fat" should be politicized.

I believe overweight people should be respected, though, as human beings.

Fat people deserve the same respect as everyone else, but society shouldn't pamper them too much by giving them handicap parking rights, and stuff like that. Nor should private airlines, private cafes and so on be obliged to facilitate for anyone because of their weight. Severe obesity requires years of neglecting your own personal health, and it actually takes less time to lose fat than it takes to gain it.

I've heard some people say that being fat doesn't necessarily mean you're unhealthy even if it can and often does lead to health problems. I'm not sure what the stats are and if it's really true that "fat isn't necessarily unhealthy".

^This is true.

While obesity makes it much more likely for you to have a whole host of health problems, it is by no means across the board. It is the same as with smoking. If you smoke, you are much more likely to have health problems, by it is not a certainty.

You have to be careful with statistics. What is applicable to a population is not applicable to an individual. On the individual level it is percentages of likelihood, not certainty.

For example, I'll use made up stat much more drastic than reality:
If 99.9% of obese people develop at least minor cardiovascular disease, then out of a population of 100,000 people, 100 individuals will have zero cardiovascular issues.

New question: what do you think of the word fat as a political identity?

I think healthy and thin is soon going to be an "extinct race" if we don't act soon.
I'm personally sick of seeing so many obese people in my country.
But I guess if you want to be fat and unhealthy, you have a right to be fat and unhealthy.
