I've been accused of hurting people's feelings, trolling, incivility, etc.. right here in PPR. To the ultra-sensitive, that's certainly much worse than mere genocide. :D

Even though our views on things sometimes conflict, I actually think you're a decent member of this forum, and you don't really strike me as being a troll. You're just a guy with your own opinions, and while people like to b***h and complain about other people's opinions, the fact remains that we're all equally entitled to our opinions, whether you're a liberal, or a conservative, or anything else entirely.

If one looks at death toll alone, I suppose it would look something like this:

The Big Bad:
Mao

The Dragon:
Genghis Khan

The 2nd World Warriors:
Stalin
Hitler
Hirohito

Dishonourable mention:
Leopold II
Pol Pot
Lenin
Kim Jong-il

Some events resulted in larger death tolls (up to 100 million in the European colonization of the Americas), but here it is difficult to assign responsibility to specific individuals for the casualties. Even ranking Hirohito, Hitler and Stalin is hard due to the difficulty of assigning responsibility for casualties during World War II, although many more recent estimates put Stalin at a higher death toll than Hitler.

EDIT: Genghis Khan included.

What about Genghis Khan he killed tens of millions, either by direct slaughter or by starvation and ill health as a direct result of his campaigns, he is also attributed to the demise of islamic scientific discoveries that until his intervention far outstripped those in the west.

Hmm... point taken. The problem is that Genghis Khan lived about 800 years ago, so there is a lot of uncertainty about the numbers. Anyway, if included, he may reach 2nd place just after Mao.

This website lists the median deaths during Mao at about 40 million, and the median deaths during Genghis Khan at about 30 million. Higher estimates put Khan at over 60 million deaths and Mao at over 70 million.

People change.

I should remind you guys that this thread is about individuals or groups throughout human history that have done some really nasty stuff, the kind nightmares are made of.

'Evil' is such a horribly subjective and abstract term that you couldn't possibly hope to quantify it.

One man's tyrant is another man's liberator.

Oliver Cromwell, he massacred towns and cities because they didn't fit in his image and he was a religious fanatic

Evil Americans shouldn't get off lightly, either.

Henry Kissinger for example, who sanctioned the indiscriminate 'breakfast, lunch and dinner' carpet bombing of Cambodia.

DRH what the heck did Hegel do to anyone , or for that matter Marx. To blame the actions of stalin and mao on them is a gross distortion of political history.

I would add Mother Teresa to the list, not because I genuinely think she was in the same league as pol pot, mao and stalin, but because she was a vicious b***h who has been venerated by a society who willfully close their eyes and ears to how she actually treated the poor, sick and dying.
