We choose what we think about and talk about.

Why discuss something negative when there is so much good news in the world that is under-reported?

That's the likely eventual outcome. The more of these murders that make the news where the murderer has AS with result in people keeping AS to themselves or not participating in support forums such as this. Members who are foolish enough to let their real life identity be known may be setting themselves up for finger-pointing and a backlash by random haters.

What bothers me a lot in all this is the terrible misinformation that journalists provide. They just copy-paste and translate the news, read someone's Twitter account, to post it online or in the newspaper while it's still full of factual mistakes and unconfirmed info, thereby creating/reinforcing misconceptions and urban myths. One of the first things they said here was that the dude had AS, which is technically true, but still harmfully wrong information as the AS was definitely not the cause of his killing.

Journalists are there to provide us with truth and facts, not with hysterical myths or unconfirmed facts that need to be denied later on because they proved to be copied too hastily.

There is a well known saying that "Journalists don't let the truth get in the way of a good story". Many don't care that their articles aren't accurate, merely that they are read and popular.

Journalists can be downright awful in situations like this. After Newtown, one family that was affected had journalists in their bushes looking through the windows of their house. The family couldn't answer the door bell or leave their house without a police escort at first. They had to rely on friends to do things like go grocery shopping for them.

The current situation with AS in the media like this scares me. I want people to know I have AS because people need to know what it is like for someone with it. I am open about being autistic for the same reason that I am scared. I don't know if I'm making any sense or not.
