We try to persuade ourselves that D-Day was the final sacrifice, it saved the civilised world, and from then on the world has only got better. Not true.
Only a complete idiot would say that. The world has been filled with wars since then, but not one that engulfed almost every country. The wars going on now are terrible, but that in no way negates what happened 70 years ago.
I am not a
complete idiot (some parts are missing). The sacrifices of D-Day did not save the world, they just changed the power structures in our favour.
And the power structures which were established after D-Day are currently under severe strain.
I am happy to believe that the allied troops who died on D-Day believed in what they were being asked to do. Maybe that's what's been missing from all the subsequent wars involving the Western Powers.
