I am a geology major, and I am curious to know what you favorite rock or mineral is, if you have one.

My favorites are gneiss, basalt, obsidian, and tourmaline.

Is that igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic?

I am more of a fan of igneous rocks.

Igneous, it's commonly found in vertical pipes. Kimberlite is where most of the worlds diamonds are found.

Now that I think of it, isn't there a town in South Africa called Kimberley, where diamond mining is prevalent?

Yep, that's what it's was named after, it's where kimberlite was first associated with diamonds

Quartz which is crystalline silicon dioxide. The white sands on the beaches in
the pan handle of Florida are a relative pure quartz. If my memory is correct oxygen
is the most abundant element in the earths crust followed by silicon. So in theory Quartz is the most plenty full compound that can be made. If heated high enough it loses its crystalline structure and becomes mere glass.

Fused quartz is quite a bit more than 'mere' glass

I like granite and limestone. I'm collecting limestone rocks to build a retaining wall in my backyard.

I'd have to go for the rather pretty Endellionite: Image
Found only just up the road from where I used to live (in Port Isaac, where they filmed, amongst others, "Saving Grace", which my brother-in-law and various friends were in - I was away at the time). I've sung (secular stuff plus carols) in St Endellion church a few times.

Dolomite. One of the best rocks for reef aquariums. Light and porous, it absorbs water rather than displaces it (very important in small tanks). Its porosity give it another advantage in its ability to become encrusted with various lifeforms. It makes for a very striking display. Cheap too.

I tried to find the clip of that line, but no dice. I've seen the movie, and it is the most absurd thing I have ever seen!
