I think this is a little more complicated then that Amazon ruined it.

I used to work for people who invested in these things and had them built. It took me a while to figure it out, but they were just spitting them out as fast as they could to turn a profit. Considering what I saw, I'm not surprised many of them ended up being abandoned. As it turns out, people know how to build it and profit from it, then profit from abandoning it also. Very sad.

in Lakewood Washington, there was this place called villa plaza which existed from the late 40s until the early 80s, where it was torn up to make the Lakewood mall, which survived until the mid 90s when it was razed to replace it with.... villa plaza [only they call it "Lakewood towne center" now. I thought then and I thought now, that the whole thing was madness.

Wow 8O

Did you know there's a site called deadmalls.com where they have a ton of stories about abandoned malls?

too bad at least some of them cannot be turned into planned living centers with built-in shopping. nobody would have to use a car to do any shopping in that case.

if all city services were there in the large mall, I would not have to drive anywhere.

the west Edmonton mall in alberta Canada has an indoor water park. so much energy could be saved if only people could be living closer together.
