No one has anything to gain from shooting down a civilian airliner. The only people that do are those that mistake it for something else -- an accident.

It's not really a big deal.

The big deal is the efforts and propaganda to destabilize Ukraine by Russia.

I check out Russian, Ukrainian and English news.

The latest I've heard is Russia is sabre rattling dropping heavy hints about having nuclear weapons. Not a good direction to go. Didn't expect that coming.

It seems to me it was most likely an accident, but the possibility that it was done deliberately to drag in more support for the war can't be ruled out; something the like the Gulf of Tonkin incident or the Moscow apartment bombings. But I agree it is probable that the separatists shot it down by mistake.

I forgot about the ring. He has the ring Mr. Frodo!

When ever I see a Pic of Putin... Now say that five times fast: Pic of Putin, Pica Putin, Picapu... oh screw it.

Anyway, that old Village People song goes thru my head. 'Macho, macho mannnn.. I gotta be a macho man.'

What about stealing the Super Bowl ring? Why is it so important? Did Putin steal the Super Bowl ring in person? Is the Super Bowl ring pictured with Putin? And if not, what is?

He asked to see a visiting American football players $25,000.00 ring, and then stuck it in his pocket and walked away. Just an odd quirk of his personality I guess.

FWIW Kraft later said that he gave it to Putin as a gift. This was around the time that Russia gave refuge to Edward Snowden so I figure it to be part of the propaganda battle, there was a major ratcheting up anti-Russian sentiment after that point.

It was important to the person he stole it from. You'd have to hide the good silver if he came to visit.Did you even read the link? And do you have a sense of humor?

@Jacoby, you have the gift thing backwards I believe. What Kraft said was that he explained its loss to friends for 8 years with the story that he had given Putin the ring as a gift. It was only in June last year that he came out saying it had actually been taken without permission.

It must have been a strange situation, and one I can understand him not wishing to publicize. One does not simply give away one's Superbowl ring. But when someone as unsavory and dangerous as Putin takes it... maybe it is healthier to keep it mum.

But you have the timing coinciding with Snowden's leaks correct. And that might have been a spur for Kraft to bring the truth out. Putin has been on the attack against the USA verbally for some years now (ie. 'Parasites'), but over the last year or so was when he added actions to his game, such as leaking conversations, harboring Snowden, etc. Anything he can find to embarrass the US.

So is Kraft's story true? I suspect so. Only if because Putin does in fact have the ring on display somewhere in the Kremlin I believe and one does not lightly make up such a lie about someone like Putin. Putin's version of course can not be trusted in anything. We have seen what a paragon of honesty he is.

Now, apparently upon noticing the hullabaloo his statement on Thursday caused, Kraft rushed to correct himself.

?It?s a humorous, anecdotal story that Robert re-tells for laughs,? Stacey James, Kraft?s spokesman, told NFL.com on Sunday. ?He loves that his ring is at the Kremlin and, as he stated back in 2005, he continues to have great respect for Russia and the leadership of President Putin.?

?In particular, he credits President Putin for modernizing the Russian economy,? she added.

The Abbott government is set to send military trainers and advisers to help Ukraine counter Russia's recent aggression against its neighbour, effectively involving Australia in one of the world's most fraught international crises.

Interesting story and thanks for the correction.

Weird considering the Ukrainians screwed them over. They started an attack on the area of the plane crash when it was being investigated by international observers and they had to stop investigating/body retrieval.
The timing sucks too, they are helping just when there is a ceasefire. Now they're pissing off Russia for nothing.

Pissing off Russia is a good thing.
