I like Pacers as well as AMC cars. I own a later descendent of the Pacer and the last new car AMC ever made before they went under, the AMC Eagle. Mine is an 86 and I love it! Would love to have a Pacer someday, those strait 6's are great and contrary to every worlds worst car blog list, the Pacer was actually a decent car as well as a lot of other AMC's.

Thank you, I figured you'd notice the avatar. :)

Unfortunately I am yet to drive a Pacer. As a matter of fact the only time I've ever seen one in person was at a classic car shop/storage facility up in Maine during a vacation. It was a 78-80 Wagon with the revised front end (different from pictured) and it clearly had seen better days. :( I think I may have a picture or two of it. I'll have to upload them to Photobucket and post it here.

I haven't taken my Eagle (her name is Rosalind) off the pavement really, it is tempting though based on what I've seen them capable of off road. :) On the road though it rides pretty nice and runs well. She has gotten me to and from community college reliably for about 6 months, has gotten me home and back to my University reliably, and can hold her own on the highway. Fuel mileage wise, the best I've ever gotten was 21 mpg. On average I get 16-18 mpg.

It's the original 258 inline 6. It currently has 93k original miles. Eagles never came with V8's. The base was a 4cyl and the 6cyl was optional. Nearly everyone opted for the 6 though and it was dropped from all Eagle variants by 1984. AMC Eagles are hard to find as they are, but finding a wagon or sedan with the 4 banger is extremely hard to find. The 4cyl is more common in the smaller Eagles like the SX-4 and the Kammback (4WD Gremlin with an Eagle nose).

They seem fine for the smaller ones, it was mainly for economy and not off roading. The 4's in the sedan and wagon may have left them a bit underpowered. AMC used two different 4cyl's, an AMC 4 and a GM Iron Duke 4.

I think the AMC 4 was the better one. With the Iron Duke, some people really like them, others hate them.

Perhaps, don't really know for sure. When I was looking for an AMC Eagle, I preferred the 6 over the 4 since the 6 is a very reliable engine and provides decent power and economy.
