Peanuts are really a legume.

It's hard to pin it down to one.
Cashews, pistachios, and pecans are my favorites but I end up eating more peanuts than anything since they are cheaper.

I like most, if not all, nuts but I am partial to cashew.

Macadamias, especially when lightly toasted. Does coconut count as a nut?

Cashew, pistachio, and hazelnut.

Hazelnuts are quite good, too. When I was a kid, we had a hazelnut tree in our yard.

We have wild Hazel nuts here.They don't really make a tree but a thicket.The nuts are the same,only smaller.
Right now I have buckets of Black Walnuts,it got loud with them hitting the tin roof.

Misslizard if you use them, how do you get those black walnut shells opened up?

They are hard to crack,that's for sure.There is a special cracker made for them,it acts more like a vise.The older couple up the road had their's mounted on a small log,then they would spread out a sheet on the floor and sit and crack them and watch tv.A hammer just tends to smash them.

I know black walnuts are used in ice cream. But can you pop in your mouth like regular walnuts?

^ I can only use them in small amounts in cooking or baking because I'm allergic to them.
Followed the link: thanks Misslizard. That's a nice gadget. My use of a hammer on them was not successful as it resulted in tiny bits.

It was actually a hickory nut tree, not hazelnut.

Yes, but they taste different than the store bought kind.

Yes,they are really tasty,at least to me.Really good in pumpkin bread,cookies or a pie.Hickory nuts are also great,but there is a variety called a pignut that's is nasty tasting.Really bitter.

Glad I could help with the nutcracker info alpineglow.Its best to only use the large chunks,if you pick up smaller bits and get a peice of shell it can be painful to bite into.

I wish I had a pine tree that produced pine nuts,I love them but they are expensive.
