You can't be expected to know someone's gender online except by what they say it is. Avatars and usernames and typed words on a screen don't tell what somebody's gender is (if their username has "girl" "boy" "man" or "woman" in it, that would probably match their gender, but even then there could be exceptions).
Some people are androgynous and for them I don't know whether they're male, female, or a different gender....maybe I don't know for people who aren't androgynous-looking also (except, I guess, to me) but I don't care if I know somebody's gender so I dont give it much thought and I've never seen it as a problem when I can't tell.
