My mum said me the other day "you are setting yourself up for a miserable life" i asked her "why" and she responded "because your friends are maturing and you are not"

why would my friends maturing have anything to do with effecting my quality of life?

I do not know your life story but I will not make assumptions either. I'm not sure why she even said that to you. How are your friends "maturing" as your mom puts it. I feel like I would need more details to answer that second question. If you are happy where your life is, that is great.

most likely, she fears that your friends will outgrow you and, in time, break off contact.
(rightfully so, i might add).

losing friends will usually have a negative impact on your happiness, especially if it happens to be your last one(s).

You have to outgrow being dependent upon other people You're a grown man. You have to rely on yourself more.
