H.P. Lovecraft's Monster Portal.

Well, it wasn't based on anything by Lovecraft, and while it did have some pretty exceptional monster effects, it was still a pretty lame movie.

Last night I watched:

Destroy All Planets [1968] ^{also known as: Gamera vs. Viras}



Aliens from a very remote part of the Universe (who conveniently speak English) discover Earth and decide they want to capture it. But Gamera, a giant flying turtle who flies by shooting jets out its leg-holes, is defending Earth. The movie is seen mostly from the viewpoint of a couple of Japanese boy scouts (though they are in Japan they conveniently speak English).

The movie's current IMDb rating is a dismal 4.5. I don't think that is correct. I think I would've given it no higher than 3.

I would not have watched the complete film except I reckon I should watch a complete film before I post about it on this thread. So, I watched the whole film and therefore I think I can now make this comment here:

Last night we finished watching the three Fantastic Beasts films.
We started with the two films we'd previously seen:

And then, last night, the new one we'd not previously seen:

We enjoyed all three films. All three are good.

The central character in all three films is "magizoologist" Newt Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne. And he purposely plays Newt as being on the Autism Spectrum...Newt is one of us!

I found one casting change a bit disconcerting. A part previously played by Johnny Depp was recast in the third film. It worked, was plausible because of the shape-shifting past of the character, and was well-performed and consistent with the mannerisms in Depp's performance...but I would've preferred Johnny Depp in the role. If there are more films in the Fantastic Beasts series and (as seems likely) the character returns then perhaps Johnny Depp might return.

In some ways this film made me think of things going on in the real world. A major public figure who is espousing hate and whose following resembles a cult...

Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion. Such a silly film with a brief message about being yourself.

My mom, my NT sister, and I enjoyed this film because this film used tension instead of graphic violence to make sure this film was worth 90 minutes of our time.

The three of us also had a favorite "kill scene."

The Black Phone.

A boy is kidnapped and held hostage in a basement by a child serial killer called the Grabber, who wears a series of grotesque masks to reflect his mood and to inspire terror in his captives. In the basement is a disconnected black phone, which when it rings, the boy can talk to the Grabber's previous victims from beyond the grave, who help him to build on their failed attempts to escape. First rate horror movie.

Sounds fun.

Jurassic World: Dominion.

We hadn't been to the cinema for 3 years, for obvious reasons.

This was a light, silly film with the usual tropes: someone gets killed by those frilly dinosaurs which spit poison. People run to hide behind a hatch and pull it down just before the dinosaur catches them. People hide behind things while dinosaurs stalk them.

The cinema was small with comfy seats and lots of leg room too.

It is just light hearted fun and the lead actors are good enough to keep it interesting.

Last night we watched:

Men [2022]

I'd agree with Kraichgauer, it is a "Very good British horror flick."

It is visually exquisite.
(At times the visuals reminded me of Annihilation [2018], another Horror film also directed by Alex Garland.)

And Men also did a wonderful job of creating a mood. It did not take long for me to decide it was "eerie", and then for my bride to declare it was "creepy", and then for us to agree it was "weird" (in a horror movie sense).
