The Black Panther (1977)

This is almost essential viewing for anyone seriously interested in British crime in the 1970s. In early 1975 a 17-year-old girl called Lesley Whittle was kidnapped by Donald Neilson, who was in fact the 'Black Panther', a man responsible for several brutal robberies and murders over the previous three years. The ransom money of £50,000 was never paid, and Whittle was subsequently found dead at the bottom of a drainage shaft in a public park. The case received massive media coverage in the UK, which was only eclipsed by that given to the notorious serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, the so-called 'Yorkshire Ripper', in the later 1970s.

I was unaware of the existence of this film until a couple of days ago, when I discovered in on YouTube. It reminds me to a considerable extent of The Executioner's Song, which deals with the case of Gary Gilmore in the USA. Neilson seems a good deal colder than Gilmore in that film, which is pretty scary.....

That'll Be The Day (1973)

Interesting film, dealing with the career of fictional British rock star Jim MacLaine, played by David Essex. This is a real slow-burner, and MacLaine is not much nearer making it by the end of the film than he was at the start (when he was only about 3 years old!), but there are a number of memorable 'coming of age' type moments.

There are one or two other real rock stars in this, such as Ringo Starr, Billy Fury and Keith Moon, as well as some interesting minor British actors and actresses, like Sue Holderness, Verna Harvey, Daphne Oxenford and Karl Howman. Also features Rosemary Leach as MacLaine's mother - she was John Wilder's mistress in the 1960s series The Power Game.

The sequel was a film called Stardust, and this is where MacLaine's rock career really takes off....
