Poem I wrote about autism

Note: I know the characteristics of autism listed may not apply to everyone--they are just intended to be examples of what some people with autism experience.

I Am Autism

I am autism.

I’m hard to pin down and impossible to understand.
Some say I’m a curse, a deadly disease comparable to cancer.
Others say I’m a gift, an eye into the beauty that most cannot see.

Often the world makes no sense to me.

People’s eyes feel like laser beams.
Tight clothes feel like torture devices.
My words come out in stammers and stutters.
I may flap my hands or spin or jump.

Sometimes the world presses down too hard
and all my rage flows out of me
in the form of screams and pounding, tearing hands.

But I am just like you.
I can love
I can feel
I can learn
and I can create.

When something grabs my interest,
it quickens my breath and my heart
and I learn everything about it.

I can put words or notes or colours
together in a way that illuminates the world.

I am not a freak
I am not a defect
and I do not need to be cured.

I am autism
and I know I’m not perfect
but I am special.

BTW, sorry if I posted this in the wrong section. I debated endlessly about whether to post it here or in Art, Writing, and Music.

i think many will be able to relate, but some more than others (i like my pants snug, but not my tops) either way if it's about you - those are probably the best.

It's not even specifically about me. I just took some examples of what people with autism might experience, in order to create a more general picture of it. But autism is such a complex disorder that it's hard to sum up in a few examples.

It's really good and true. Didn't quite rhyme though, but some poems don't so... And I agree that there is no boring person
