I was about 9 when the training wheels came off, at the insistence of my parents. I really enjoyed riding once I learned, but the learning process was not fun at all. I have clear memories of my dad helping me balance and then letting go before I thought I was ready, of me lying on the pavement shouting "I told you I couldn't do it!", etc.

Seven, I think. It was my brother who taught me, laughing at me and secretly holding onto the seat, and then yelling "You're doing it! You're doing it!"

That's the nicest thing I've said about him in forty years. Thanks for reminding me. :)

Learned around 7 or so. Forgot when I got to be 9. Never really managed it again (though I've tried)

I think for me it MUST have been 6. I don't associate 5 with a bike, and by 7 I was doing fine. Oh yeah, NO training wheels. In my book, the question implied that.

I was about 8..never had any problems with riding a bike. I used to even be a bike courier.

I don't know what i would do if I didn't have a bike..I am terrified of driving a car...i can't even ride a scooter.

I was about 7 or 8. My favorites thing as a kid was the "Big Wheels" that I rode as a kid. (Anyone remember "The Green Machine"?) It was a big deal for my father. I loved to bike ride, but my knees stayed scraped up as a kid all the time I would fall off my bike. (We didn't wear helmets then in the late '70s.) Luckily I never had any head injuries, just knee injuries.

I think I was around 9. It was a big deal to my parents as well. I had a number of wipeouts for years after they took off the training wheels. Never have had good balance. I ended up having to get stitches in my knee once and didn't ride the bike much after that. In fact has been at least 25 years since I have ridden a bike unless you can count a stationary exercise bike.

5 or so. I remember learning, but I had no idea of what age I was. I have trouble with memory in that way. Great memory, but no talent for organizing it chronologically. Then I remembered that my brother was in kindergarten that year, so I put 5 or 6. Then I remembered that they changed the start age by one year, so he ended up going twice(so he wouldnt stay home for a year), so I adjusted it to five.

I dont recall having any difficulty learning, but i dont have any memories of riding much after that, until we moved. Perhaps I didnt have a bike?
